Dominik Szoboszlai has lifted the lid on some of the added responsibilities he has taken on since being appointed vice-captain, while also reminding his teammates of their own responsibilities.

‌

Szoboszlai was one of three players appointed as Virgil van Dijk’s deputy following the departure of Andy Robertson during the summer. As well as the Hungarian, Alisson Becker and Joe Gomez have also been handed vice-captaincy duties.

‌

The new role came as a reward following what was a superb individual season for Szoboszlai, with his performances seeing him tipped by various pundits and supporters as a possible successor to Van Dijk as captain.

The 25-year-old may have moved closer to becoming the club’s next captain after signing a new long-term contract during the summer, with Szoboszlai committing his future to the Reds until 2031.

Speaking about his new contract, Szoboszlai commented in a new Liverpool roundtable discussion alongside Milos Kerkez and Ryan Gravenberch: “To be honest, I like to have responsibility. Maybe last season. I think on the pitch, I actually tried to take responsibility and worked out quite well.”

He added: “I think in this team, you have a lot of guys with who like to take responsibility, which is nice and easier for everyone, you know, because I think our main point is to become a real family, you know, because then after that you can be successful.

“To talk is easy, but you have to also show it on the pitch, and I think that's the main point. What this season is going to ask us - are we ready to compete again on the highest level? I think we are, but we have to start to do it.”

Szoboszlai was then asked about implementing the team’s fines now he’s a vice-captain, to which he joked: “I'm one of the policemen. Yes. For the fines.”

Although Szoboszlai has now been promoted to a more senior role at Liverpool, the midfielder has insisted his outlook hasn’t changed on what he needs to give the Reds, or on the responsibilities within the side.

"I don't think you have to be a vice captain to set an example as well, because them two (Kerkez and Gravenberch) can also set the example. Everyone else can set the example, because some days you are maybe more focused. The other one is not so much you bring him up, you know.

“So that's what should make us special, and that's what we are working on."
