Chelsea winger Estevao’s representatives have dismissed suggestions that the Brazilian prodigy has become disillusioned with his peripheral role under Xabi Alonso. His entourage reportedly says the campaign is long and they are genuinely confident there will eventually be fairer opportunities to impress.
However, some in Brazil were far more sceptical and implied the Spanish tactician does not appear especially taken with the teenager. The 19-year-old has played just 148 minutes in six appearances this season, starting twice in Carabao Cup wins against Luton Town and Leeds United.
His Premier League involvement has been even more meagre, four late substitute cameos amounting to a paltry 23 minutes. He was last seen in the chastening 3-0 defeat at Brentford, where he played for barely five minutes.
The problem, it seems, is fundamentally structural, based on the tactical set-up Alonso has implemented at Stamford Bridge since July. Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer and club-record £117m signing Morgan Rogers have been given attacking roles in the favoured 3-4-2-1 system, and the trio have been formidable, scoring 10 goals between them.
The contrast with Estevao’s initial campaign is stark, having scored eight goals in 36 appearances in all competitions before a grade four hamstring tear ruled him out of a World Cup spot. However, the teenager, whose contract runs until June 2033, has not made a public fuss about his diminished status while on international duty.
Bournemouth are the next visitors to Premier League action on October 10, and the mounting pressure could see Alonso recall a precocious talent who still holds plenty of promise.
Willian Says Estevao Can Be Key Player at Stamford Bridge
Former Chelsea winger Willian has given his full backing to compatriot Estevao, stating he is convinced the teenager has all the qualities to thrive in West London. Earlier this month, the veteran Brazilian, who spent seven glorious years at Stamford Bridge before moving to Arsenal in 2020, expressed his admiration:
“Estevao is a different kind of player. He has great quality and a commanding presence. He undoubtedly draws attention and plays an important role in the Chelsea squad. He certainly has everything it takes to be a key figure.”
Willian left the Premier League in the summer of 2025 when his contract with Fulham expired, but it’s clear he still keeps a keen eye on his former club.
However, his comments came before a further downturn in Estevao’s fortunes as the winger was then limited to brief cameos from the bench. As the domestic campaign takes shape, it should become considerably clearer whether Alonso ultimately shares Willian’s assessment.
