Barcelona hold advantage in race to sign winger linked with Arsenal

Barcelona completed the signing of Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal on transfer deadline day, in a deal worth up to €15 million, with a sell-on fee included.

The 29-year-old Brazilian signed a three-year contract at the Spotify Camp Nou, joining the Spanish champions after they lost Robert Lewandowski at the end of the previous season.

Jesus confirmed at his presentation that he accepted a significant salary reduction to make the move happen.

“I took a significant salary drop, but it’s a dream to be here,” he said.

“If you had asked me one month ago, I would have said it was unlikely this would happen. At 29, I didn’t think I would have the chance to come to Barca.”

Jesus leaves Arsenal having scored 32 goals in 123 appearances across all competitions since joining from Manchester City in a £45m deal in 2022.

His time at the Emirates was disrupted by injury, most notably an ACL tear sustained in Arsenal’s FA Cup defeat to Manchester United in January 2025.

He never fully reclaimed his place in Mikel Arteta’s starting eleven after returning to fitness, with Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres preferred ahead of him.

He managed just three Premier League starts in his final season at the club, which ended with Arsenal lifting the Premier League title.

Now, according to a report from TV 2 Direkte, cited by SPORT, the Catalans are monitoring another player with an Arsenal connection, though this one has barely started his career.

Barcelona have reportedly set their sights on Gabriel Rajkovic, the 15-year-old winger at Norwegian club Valerenga.

Born on 23 February 2011, Rajkovic made his Eliteserien debut on 15 March 2026 against Sandefjord at the age of 15 years and 20 days, becoming the youngest player in the competition’s history.

According to TV 2 Direkte, Barcelona scouts were in attendance at the Eliteserien fixture between Valerenga and Bodo/Glimt on 8 August.

Gabriel Rajkovic did not disappoint. He scored his first Eliteserien goal in that match, a 2–1 defeat to Bodo/Glimt, becoming the second-youngest scorer in the competition’s history at 15 years and 166 days old, just 15 days older than record-holder Martin Odegaard.

Rajkovic signed a four-year professional contract with Vålerenga in March 2026, tying him to the club until 2029.

According to the TV 2 Direkte report, he cannot move abroad immediately under current regulations. He turns 16 on 23 February 2027, meaning next summer is the earliest opportunity for a foreign club to sign him.

Barcelona are not the only club monitoring him.

According to the same report, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea have also shown interest in the teenager. For Arsenal, that interest comes with a structural problem.

Following Brexit, English clubs face considerably tighter restrictions when signing young players from EU countries, placing Premier League clubs at a disadvantage compared to sides based within the EU, such as Barcelona.

Norway is not an EU member, but its players benefit from EEA agreements that regulate youth transfers differently for non-English clubs.

Gabriel Rajkovic plays as a left-sided winger but is capable of operating on either flank or through the centre when required.

He came through the youth academies of Nordstrand and KFUM before joining Valerenga’s setup ahead of the 2026 season.

TV 2 commentator Morten Langli has described him as one of the biggest talents in the world for his age group.

The race for his signature will not be settled before at least next summer. But with Barcelona, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea already tracking him, clubs have little time to waste.
