Knicks hit major roadblock in Karl-Anthony Towns’ $276 million contract talks image
The New York Knicks and star center Karl-Anthony Towns appear no closer to reaching a long-term agreement as the defending NBA champions prepare to open training camp.
According to ESPN, contract extension discussions between Towns and the Knicks have stalled following extensive negotiations throughout the offseason. With training camp approaching, an agreement reportedly isn’t expected in the immediate future.
Towns, who turns 31 in November, is eligible for a massive extension worth as much as four years and $276 million. However, New York’s financial situation could make committing that amount complicated.
The veteran big man is already scheduled to earn $57 million this season and holds a $61 million player option for the 2027-28 campaign. That gives both sides time, as negotiations can continue during the season even without a deal before camp.
Towns has played a major role since arriving in New York, earning All-Star recognition in each of his first two seasons with the franchise.
His value became especially apparent during last season’s championship run. Towns averaged 15.9 points, 10.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists while shooting 55% from the field during the playoffs. New York went 16-3 in the postseason and ultimately defeated the San Antonio Spurs in five games to capture its first NBA championship in 53 years.
Towns extension talks hit a standstill
Despite Towns’ importance, finances remain a significant consideration.
Knicks owner James Dolan has publicly discussed his desire to keep the organization from operating above the NBA’s restrictive second-apron threshold. That approach already influenced the roster this offseason, with backup center Mitchell Robinson departing for the Boston Celtics.
Towns isn’t New York’s only upcoming financial decision.
Josh Hart is also eligible for an extension, while stars Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby will become extension eligible next offseason. The Knicks must determine how to keep their championship core together while maintaining financial flexibility.
For now, Towns remains under contract and positioned to help New York pursue consecutive championships. But unless negotiations regain momentum, one of the Knicks’ biggest long-term questions could follow them into the regular season.
