30-year-old Nick Chubb will forever be beloved by the Cleveland Browns fanbase.
He surprised many by announcing his retirement before the 2026 season. Chubb played eight seasons in the NFL, seven with the Browns, and his final one with the Houston Texans.
Injuries were an issue for him, but Chubb always fought his way back from them. His work ethic was unparalleled. It turns out that drive, not the injuries, is what ultimately caused him to call it quits.

What Chubb said

Chubb described himself as not being fully present in his life. He was locked in, almost to the point of being unaware of anything else going on around him.
He said: “During games, it was like a blackout. That’s why people say I didn’t talk on the sidelines. I didn’t, ’cause I was so locked in on what was ahead of me. It’s like I wasn’t even there. And I would snap out of it when we were winning or when the game was over, and I would just kind of come back to myself. So that’s kind of why I needed to stop playing football, because I was never present.”
The offseason did not give him much relief. He called it a nonstop process of determining what he needed to lift, run, or do every day to be a better player the next season.
His 30th birthday was a turning point. Chubb said: And I look up, like, 30 years old, and I’m like, okay, there’s some things in life that I haven’t accomplished or I haven’t done just being a human, not an athlete. So that kind of led to me wanting to stop, more than just my injuries. Just living my life, living the life that I want to live.”

Ex-Browns Coach Kevin Stefanski’s 2020 prophetic description of Chubb
In his first season with the Browns, former coach Kevin Stefanski talked about Chubb being “all ball, all the time.”
That mindset is what made him great and also what caused him to call it a career early and abruptly.
