Karl-Anthony Towns could take a pay cut to stay with the Knicks despite stalled talks image
Karl-Anthony Towns has been a successful player throughout his career, but the pinnacle of his NBA tenure has been the championship with the New York Knicks. Months after that title win, Towns is eligible for a contract extension, and naturally, he would love to get the biggest contract possible.
That is why the negotiations between the Knicks and Towns have stalled, but it seems that there might be a chance that the player could take a pay cut. It is not a foreign concept for the Knicks because their superstar, Jalen Brunson, took a pay cut to help the team in 2024, and that led to them winning a title.

It is normal for a player like Towns to ask for as much money as possible. However, teams have changed their approach in recent years because they have to operate under the second apron most of the time. The Knicks also want more balance from their contracts with players.
Towns and the Knicks have not agreed to a contract just yet, which could mean that he is a free agent in the summer of 2027 if KAT does not take his player option. It will certainly be a gamble for him if he does that, as his next contract will likely be the final major and big-money deal of his career.

While there has not been an agreement, there are rumblings of Towns being willing to take a pay cut just like Brunson. However, the tough challenge in that instance is how much he will be willing to sacrifice to help the Knicks maintain the team's financial stability.
"Towns is willing to play on a deal that isn’t the max to help New York, per league sources, but it’s still unclear how much he’s willing to leave on the table. This is likely the last massive contract opportunity for Towns, who turns 31 during the season," James Edwards III of The Athletic said about Towns' contract situation.
This is certainly a delicate situation, especially since the Knicks want to maintain the core that won them the first championship in 52 years. Towns was a massive part of that, and he can stay with the team as long as the numbers are not outrageous.
