Chelsea winger Estevao has opened up about his recent struggles under Xabi Alonso, saying he wants to keep working hard despite his limited playing time.
The 19-year-old was called up to Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad for their upcoming international friendly double-header against Australia after missing the World Cup due to injury.
The Chelsea star has struggled to nail down a first-team spot during the opening weeks of Alonso’s reign, making six appearances but playing only 148 minutes. He has started just two of those matches.
He was more involved last season under Enzo Maresca, featuring 36 times for the Blues across all competitions. He rewarded the manager’s faith with eight goals and four assists.
Despite his situation, the Brazilian has made it clear he will not question Alonso’s decision in public or let his frustration become a distraction.
He believes the only way to respond is by showing what he can do on the pitch.
“I think every coach has their own way of playing,” he said (via Diario AS). “Of course, we work every day, I give my best every day, and that’s what I do.
“We have quality players at Chelsea, so what I do is focus on what I can control, I try to give my best in training, when I get an opportunity I try to give my best, it goes day after day.
“I try to seize every opportunity I have, I try to control everything I can, and I leave it in God’s hands, and I trust myself a lot too.”
Estevao has fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea, especially following the arrival of Morgan Rogers in a British record £117 million deal from Aston Villa.
The Englishman has formed one of the most deadly frontlines in the Premier League alongside Joao Pedro and England teammate Cole Palmer.
He has also hit the ground running, racking up three goals and four assists in his first seven games for Chelsea. His form has forced Estevao into a bench role.
Alonso has made it clear that the £29m Brazilian is still in his plans despite the situation, but Estevao must be ready to take his chance when it comes.
