Mikel Arteta has already decided £200,000-a-week star's Arsenal career is over [view]

Arsenal didn't complete all the summer transfer business they wanted to, with it being no secret that Julian Alvarez was their dream striker target.

Having sold Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, and with doubts remaining over Eberechi Eze's performances in that position, Arsenal were also said to be keen to add another left-sided option to their squad after Christos Tzolis, following links with Morgan Rogers.

According to the latest suggestions from Fabrizio Romano, the Gunners are planning to add a new striker and right-back to Mikel Arteta's squad, to ensure they keep improving.

He told the Here We Go podcast:

"Arsenal are still looking at strikers. That’s the reality, they are considering options, looking at options.

“Then I would not call that something imminent or urgent because Arsenal are very happy with the strikers they have.

“If you ask me for 2027, striker is an area they want to cover and an area where I expect Arsenal to do something. If it’s not going to be January, it might be in the summer transfer window.

Despite a few summer transfer misses, including Rogers who ended up at Chelsea, the north London outfit had made a 100% start to the new season prior to their trip to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

A humbling 3-0 defeat is a reminder that there is no room for complacency if they want to not only retain their Premier League title, but also win the Champions League, and Arteta and his players must now stew on that result before hosting Leeds United at the Emirates on October 10.

There are also some Arsenal players who have a lot to think about in terms of their futures over the next few weeks, especially with the news that the club are already looking at two major signings in 2027.

One of those is 2025 summer signing Viktor Gyokeres, who has largely been cast aside by Arteta this term.

While Romano claims that Arsenal are happy with Gyokeres, it's hard to see how that is the case when you see how he has been utilised by Arteta this term.

Despite making 55 appearances and scoring 21 goals in his debut season at the Emirates following a £64m move from Sporting Lisbon, it has been a totally different story for the Sweden international this term.

The 28-year-old has been limited to just 207 minutes of action across their eight fixtures, with Kai Havertz the clear frist choice option for the centre-forward role.

The most worrying thing for Arteta is that when he has handed Gyokeres two starts, against Napoli in the Champions League and Ipswich Town in the EFL Cup, he hasn't shown up and things like his movement and desire have been called into question.

Perhaps Gyokeres believed he was going to secure a summer move to Atletico Madrid, with plenty of talk during the summer that he could be involved in a swap deal that would see Julian Alvarez arrive at the Emirates, if the Argentina international decided he wanted the move.

Having already decided he isn't his first-choice striker, Arteta won't be impressed with what he has seen from Gyokeres on the pitch this season, especially given he is earning £200,000-a-week, according to talkSPORT.

The fact that Arsenal are looking to sign a striker in 2027 is only further confirmation that Arteta has decided that there is no long-term future for the Swede in north London.
