The Athletic provide update on Lamine Camara-Liverpool news

The Athletic have provided a fresh update on Liverpool’s continued interest in Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara

Liverpool’s interest in strengthening their midfield options did not end when the summer transfer window closed.

Behind the scenes, the club’s recruitment staff have continued to track developments involving players they considered but ultimately did not pursue in August.

One name keeps recurring in those conversations.

According to The Athletic’s James Pearce, Liverpool retain a strong interest in a player who came close to becoming one of their most significant additions of the summer, despite no move ever materialising.

The situation surrounding him remains unresolved, and Anfield sources suggest that could change before too long.

That player is Lamine Camara. The Monaco midfielder was the subject of a dramatic deadline-day saga last month, one that Liverpool watched closely without ever entering the fray themselves.

Pearce reports that Camara would have been Liverpool’s top target this summer had they gone into the market for a new midfielder.

The Senegal international was identified internally as the club’s preferred option, but with Alexis Mac Allister remaining at Anfield, the move was never triggered.

Camara, 22, almost left Monaco anyway.

Chelsea agreed a deal worth around £47.1 million to sign him as a replacement for Enzo Fernandez, only for Monaco to perform a late U-turn and pull out of the agreement before the deadline.

That left Camara still on the Ligue 1 club’s books, and still on Liverpool’s radar.

Mac Allister had been seen as a possible departure this summer after Liverpool opted not to offer him a contract extension, with his current deal running until June 2028.

Had he left, Pearce’s report states that Lamine Camara would have been Liverpool’s chosen replacement. In the end, the Argentine stayed, and no approach was made for the Monaco midfielder.

Instead of bringing in a new midfielder, Liverpool opted to promote from within. Academy graduate Trey Nyoni, 19, has been backed to step into a bigger role following the departure of Curtis Jones, who completed a move to Inter Milan on August 21 for an initial £30 million after 16 years at the club.

Nyoni impressed during pre-season under new head coach Andoni Iraola and has been handed increased first-team involvement as a result.

Liverpool judged his progress sufficient to avoid the need for an external signing in Jones’ position, despite reported interest in alternatives including Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton earlier in the window.

Camara’s situation, though, has not gone away. Reports indicate he was told by parties close to Liverpool to wait, with a move viewed as possible in 2027, while Mac Allister’s contract situation continues to be monitored at Anfield.

Chelsea are also expected to renew their interest in the midfielder, setting up potential competition for his signature when the situation develops further.
