Everton have released ticket details for next month’s Carabao Cup clash with Newcastle United, when almost 8,000 visiting supporters will add a different feel to a night at the Hill Dickinson.
David Moyes’s side host Newcastle on Thursday, 29 October, with kick-off at 7.45pm and a place in the quarter-finals at stake. The visitors have been given an allocation of 7,732 tickets, considerably more than Premier League clubs normally receive at Everton’s new home.
It means a sizeable section of the stadium will be occupied by Newcastle supporters for a tie Everton’s players have already made clear they want to win.
Garner wants Everton to attack Carabao Cup
James Garner revealed after the 1-0 third-round victory over Wolves that the squad had spoken about making a serious attempt to go deep into the competition.
“You want to go as far in the cup as possible, and we spoke among ourselves about wanting to make a good run this year and potentially win it,” he said.
For Everton, plenty is riding on the competition. The club haven’t won a major trophy since the FA Cup in 1995 and have never lifted the League Cup, coming closest when they lost the 1977 final to Aston Villa after two replays.
Victory over Newcastle would take Everton into the League Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2015/16, when Roberto Martinez’s side eventually lost to Manchester City over two legs in the last four.
The size of Newcastle’s allocation should also change the atmosphere inside the Hill Dickinson. As we reported when the 7,732 figure was confirmed, the visitors will have close to 15 per cent of the stadium’s capacity. For a knockout game under the lights, Newcastle’s support will be hard to miss.
Everton need the blue sections of the ground to respond. There have already been some memorable atmospheres since the move from Goodison Park, but this will be one of the first major knockout games at the new stadium and the home support will heavily outnumber the visitors.
Garner said after the Wolves victory that he saw no reason why Everton couldn’t put together a proper cup run.
Newcastle now stand between Moyes’s side and the last eight. With 7,732 away supporters inside the Hill Dickinson, Everton will want it to sound and feel like a home cup tie.
