Chelsea could revisit their interest in Diego Moreira after the winger made a promising start to life at AC Milan. His performances in Italy have brought fresh attention to a player who previously impressed at Strasbourg, as per latest transfer news.
Diego Moreira’s Milan form puts Chelsea on alert
As reported by Football Insider, Moreira’s football journey since joining Chelsea in 2023 has taken several turns. The Belgian made just one senior appearance for the Blues before heading to Lyon on loan. He later joined Strasbourg permanently in 2024, where he grew into an important part of the team.
His form in France raised the possibility of a Stamford Bridge return, with Chelsea reportedly holding a buy-back clause. Instead, Moreira joined AC Milan for a reported £42.6 million. The 22-year-old has already begun making an impression in Italy. He started his Milan career among the substitutes but caught the eye during the match against Juventus on September 6. A week later, he scored twice in Milan’s 2-2 draw against Lazio before adding another goal in the 3-0 win over Lecce.
Those performances have strengthened his position at Milan and could bring him back into Chelsea’s thinking. The Blues’ owners valued Moreira when he was at Strasbourg, and his early displays in Italy may renew interest in bringing him back to London.
Chelsea could use Diego Moreira at wing-back
Chelsea’s current tactical setup could give Moreira a route back into the squad. Manager Xabi Alonso has favoured a 3-4-2-1 formation, which places added demands on the players operating in the wide areas.
Moreira played as a wing-back at Milan, managed by Ruben Amorim. His ability to carry the ball forward, take on defenders and contribute in both halves could make him an option for the Premier League club if they look to strengthen that part of the team.
His recent numbers also offer an interesting comparison with Pedro Neto, as he played on the right side in the Blues’ back five. Moreira has stronger figures in several areas, including expected goals, successful passes and shots on target.
The Milan player has also posted higher numbers in dribbles completed, battles in the air, duels won, touches inside the opponents’ box and number of fouls won. He has recorded more clearances and tackles while being dispossessed less often. Neto, however, has better figures for chance creation and expected assists. The comparison shows that both players offer different qualities, rather than making a Chelsea return an obvious decision.

A possible Stamford Bridge reunion
Moreira joined Chelsea in 2022 and spent time with the club’s youth setup before making his first-team debut. After one senior appearance, he left Chelsea to continue his career in France at Strasbourg, with his spell at Stamford Bridge giving him valuable experience at a top-level club.
His start at Milan has given Chelsea reason to monitor his progress. His attacking output and defensive work could appeal to Alonso if the club want another option on the flank. However, there is no confirmation that Chelsea are preparing a formal approach. Moreira only joined Milan in August, and any move would depend on both clubs’ plans.
For now, his focus is establishing himself in Serie A. A strong run of form could increase interest, but a return to Chelsea remains only a possibility. Chelsea will continue to monitor his development as the season progresses. Moreira can play several roles, which could make him an option for a future transfer window.
