Arsenal have been linked with a renewed January move for Julian Alvarez just weeks after the Argentina international decided to remain at Atletico Madrid.
The 26-year-old was pursued during the closing stages of the summer window before electing to stay in Spain. Read Arsenal covered the deadline-day outcome in Arsenal’s Julian Alvarez pursuit ends as striker makes final decision, but fresh reports have now reopened the possibility of a winter approach.
There is currently no suggestion Arsenal have submitted a bid or reopened formal talks with Atletico.
However, the situation around Alvarez has changed enough for the forward to return to the transfer conversation ahead of January.
Arsenal linked with fresh Julian Alvarez move
FourFourTwo reports that Arsenal have been given renewed hope of signing Alvarez when the transfer window reopens.
The report, citing Spanish outlet Fichajes, claims Barcelona have moved away from pursuing the former Manchester City forward as they prioritise other areas of Hansi Flick’s squad.
That could remove one of the major obstacles Arsenal faced during the summer.
Alvarez had favoured remaining in Spain and Barcelona emerged as his preferred destination, while Atletico were resistant to strengthening a direct domestic rival.
Arsenal ultimately ended the summer without another marquee forward after Alvarez remained at the Metropolitano.
FourFourTwo now reports that Mikel Arteta’s side continue to evaluate their attacking options ahead of January, although any potential deal remains speculative at this stage.
Marc Pubill speaks about Alvarez after difficult summer
Alvarez’s future also continues to attract attention in Spain following a turbulent end to the transfer window.
Atletico defender Marc Pubill has publicly backed his team-mate after the Argentine remained with Diego Simeone’s squad.
Speaking to MARCA, with his comments reported by Yahoo Sports, Pubill said:
“Julian is a spectacular player, extremely good, and luckily we have him here.”
Pubill added that Atletico’s players intend to support Alvarez as he attempts to rediscover his best form.
The comments underline Atletico’s desire to reintegrate a player who appeared increasingly likely to leave during the summer.
Julian Alvarez’s 2026/27 Atletico stats
Alvarez has found regular starts difficult to come by during the opening weeks of the campaign.
According to Opta’s current career data, he has made three La Liga appearances this season without starting a league match.

Competition Appearances Minutes Goals Assists
La Liga 3 83 0 0
Champions League 1 90 0 1
Total 4 173 0 1
His only start has come in the Champions League defeat against Liverpool, where he completed the full 90 minutes and registered an assist.
Alvarez has since returned from a minor muscular problem and featured from the bench in Atletico’s 2-1 Madrid derby victory over Real Madrid.
Could Arsenal sign Julian Alvarez in January?
The renewed links should still be treated cautiously.
Alvarez remains an Atletico Madrid player under contract and there has been no confirmed Arsenal bid, agreement or fresh negotiation.
A January transfer would also require Atletico to decide they are prepared to lose a major attacking asset midway through the season.
What has changed is the wider picture.
Barcelona are reported to have moved their focus elsewhere, Alvarez has played only 83 La Liga minutes so far and Arsenal still have reason to monitor elite forwards after ending the summer without the additional attacker they pursued.
That makes Alvarez a player worth watching again as January approaches.
For now, though, this is renewed transfer interest rather than an advanced Arsenal move.
