Arsenal’s Max Dowman has handed England a tricky choice between a quick senior test under Thomas Tuchel and a slower route through the Under-21s.

Max Dowman is only 16, and England already face a real selection puzzle, because the Arsenal teenager keeps breaking records. Now, Thomas Tuchel and Lee Carsley are deciding how quickly he should step up in international football, as per latest news.
Thomas Tuchel sees a chance for Max Dowman in the chaos
England lost five players from their squad on Monday. Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo, Tino Livramento and Marcus Rashford all pulled out before a busy run against Spain, Croatia and Czechia. Tuchel added James Garner and Morgan Gibbs-White as cover, but he might also be thinking about a much bigger surprise.
Dowman is already at St George’s Park with the U19s, so the senior group is only a short walk away. Tuchel is said to be considering a first training session with Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham. For a young player, that visit would cost very little and could teach him a huge amount. That is especially with the senior team playing four matches in ten days, starting with Spain on Saturday.
England’s boss has never hidden his interest, and before the World Cup he admitted that he felt almost parental responsibility when talking about the teenager. This suggests he wants to protect him while still keeping the door open.
Carsley wants a slower road for Dowman
England U21s boss Lee Carsley, who has won two European Championships with this youth side, believes Dowman will inevitably join his group. As reported by The Sun, Carsley wants the timing to be right so that Dowman can play real minutes and compete with others in his position. He also pointed to how Ethan Nwaneri was pushed forward early as a lesson.
The U21s face Kazakhstan on Friday, Slovakia on 2 October and Ireland on 6 October in their Euro 2027 qualifiers. The senior withdrawals could change the shape of Carsley’s squad if Tuchel borrows some of his players. Even so, Carsley says he speaks with Tuchel regularly and that Dowman is always part of the talks.

The youngster’s numbers are incredible
On 14 March 2026 Dowman became the youngest scorer in Premier League history at 16 years and 73 days, beating James Vaughan’s old mark by 197 days, and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said afterwards that doing this at such an age, under so much pressure, was simply not normal. Two months later he became the youngest player ever to win the title, at 16 years and 139 days. Dowman became Premier League’s youngest goalscorer in the history of the competition.
Dowman’s 2026/27 stats so far at Arsenal, as per FOTMOB:
Teams Appearances Minutes Played Goals Assists
Arsenal 2 99 2 0
Arsenal U21 2 150 0 1
He then became the youngest player to start a league match, at 16 years and 144 days on the final day at Crystal Palace. Before that, he set the Champions League record as its youngest player at 15 years and 308 days. He has now played 13 games in all competitions and scored two goals as the Gunners won 4-2 at Ipswich in the Carabao Cup.
England could take the next step in the November or March windows. With that, Walcott’s record of 17 years and 75 days as the youngest senior England player would then be under threat. Dowman turns 17 at the end of December, so both windows give him a real chance to make history. But, the national side must decide whether the record is worth the risk.
