Alejandro Garnacho’s season-long loan at Aston Villa could be cut short in January if the Chelsea winger keeps being marooned on the substitutes’ bench. Neither Chelsea nor Villa has a unilateral January exit clause, so both clubs would need to agree to end the loan early.
The 22-year-old has featured for just 31 minutes of competitive football and has failed to start a game since his arrival. He did not make appearances off the bench for Villa in their last three games against Nottingham Forest, Tottenham Hotspur and Coventry City. Meanwhile, Spain’s top-flight clubs are said to be monitoring his situation closely, but no party is looking to alter the deal at present.
Chelsea is unlikely to allow an early recall unless another club is prepared to take him on loan and assure Garnacho of regular first-team football. Interestingly, the Argentine has only played for Villa this season and in theory could still join another European club in the middle of the campaign. That makes him different to Harvey Elliott, who had played for both Liverpool and Villa before January and was therefore ineligible to move elsewhere in Europe.
It is no surprise that Garnacho is linked with La Liga given he came through the academy at Atletico Madrid and joined Manchester United in 2020. However, the attacking hierarchy under Emery has still proved formidable, with George Hemmings, Emi Buendia and new signing Ibrahim Mbaye all currently ahead of Garnacho.
The deal’s permanent obligation is apparently appearance-based, and Chelsea previously thought it would be easy to meet. Activating that clause would take the overall package to the Blues’ £43m valuation, but Garnacho’s marginalisation has made that prospect increasingly unlikely. The January window will be crucial in determining whether his Villa stay continues or goes completely down the pan.
Garnacho’s Lacklustre Chelsea Spell Led To Villa Park Change
Garnacho’s current situation at Villa Park comes after a similarly frustrating single season at Stamford Bridge after his £40 million capture from Manchester United. The Argentine featured 43 times in all competitions in 2025-26, scoring eight goals and laying on four assists.
But only one of those goals came in the Premier League, and he struggled to secure a regular starting berth throughout the season. He never quite won over supporters after his move from Old Trafford.
Xabi Alonso’s arrival in July hastened his exit, with the Spaniard reportedly telling Garnacho he would not be guaranteed regular minutes. The winger was given permission to miss pre-season at Cobham while his exit was being sorted out. Chelsea’s attacking options were already considerably congested by the arrival of club-record £117million signing Morgan Rogers from Villa days earlier.
