Two games into what’s looked like a promising campaign, the New York Giants lost their franchise quarterback, Jaxson Dart, to a season-ending injury. Jameis Winston now gets a chance to live out his “dream” as an NFL starting QB again. But in the NFL, that opportunity may not last long, and as a former No. 1 overall pick, Winston knows that all too well.
Everyone’s coming up with lists on who the Giants could turn to instead of Winston, or possibly just to supplement the current QB depth chart, which has no one else on it. Though, Jake Haener will surely be promoted from the practice squad for Sunday’s game. Still, it may not be long until the Giants add another quarterback to the organization, and ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter just tossed out a couple of ideas.

On Thursday, Schefter went on ESPN’s “Get Up” to discuss the Giants’ QB situation. While doing so, Schefter said there are two “interesting” options. Arizona’s Gardner Minshew, who’s played for Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy before in Kansas City, and Mac Jones, who’s coming off arguably a career year playing under Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco.
“There are some interesting candidates out there. Gardner Minshew is in Arizona. The Cardinals have Jacoby Brissett, they have Carson Beck. Minshew played for Matt Nagy in Kansas City. Nagy is now the Giants’ offensive coordinator. And Minshew also beat John Harbaugh in Baltimore twice. You could call San Francisco on Mac Jones. But it’s gonna cost you a lot to get him out of there if the 49ers are even willing. I think the Giants want to see how this week goes with Jameis Winston before they make any reactions but it’s a tough spot to be in. Teams are not looking to make trades. In-season quarterback trades rarely work out well and it puts the Giants in a very tough spot.”

As Schefter noted, with how close Sunday’s game is, the Giants will be rolling with Winston this week. A great game could earn him a longer leash. Though a rough outing may lead to more Giants trade rumors involving QBs. Possibly even for Minshew or Jones.
