Everton news&talking points: Maitland-Niles, Morton, Friedkin and Newcastle

Everton may be into the international break, but Thursday has still produced plenty of news around the Hill Dickinson.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has received Premier League recognition for his dramatic goal against Manchester United, Tyler Morton has been linked with the Blues and Danny Mills has offered his view on Dan Friedkin and Everton’s summer sales.

There has also been confirmation of ticket details for next month’s Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle United, while Omari Benjamin gave David Moyes another reminder of the young striking options further down the club.

Maitland-Niles up for Goal of the Month

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has been nominated for the Premier League’s September Goal of the Month award for his 96th-minute equaliser against Manchester United.

The 29-year-old had been on the pitch for less than 20 minutes of his Everton debut when he struck from 25 yards to rescue a 2-2 draw at the Hill Dickinson.

Harvey Barnes, Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Dunk, Nicolas Jackson, Emiliano Buendia and Jay Dasilva complete the eight-man shortlist.

Everton linked with Tyler Morton

Former Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton is the latest name to be linked with Everton ahead of the January transfer window.

PitchsideDaily reports that the Blues are among several Premier League clubs tracking the 23-year-old, who has established himself at Lyon since leaving Liverpool permanently in 2025.

Liverpool, Newcastle United, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Brighton are also named in the report. There is no suggestion Everton have approached Lyon or opened talks, so at this stage the claim goes no further than the Blues tracking the midfielder.

Mills more concerned by player sales than Friedkin absence

Danny Mills says Everton supporters have more reason to worry about the sale of important players than whether Dan Friedkin attends matches.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Mills described selling leading assets as “a worry” following a summer in which Iliman Ndiaye, Beto, Tim Iroegbunam and Nathan Patterson all left permanently.

Ndiaye’s move to Manchester City was the biggest of those deals, while the proposed £40m signing of Folarin Balogun collapsed late in the window.

Mills was far less concerned by Friedkin’s continued absence from Everton matches, describing whether an owner attends games as “pretty irrelevant”.

Newcastle cup night takes shape

Everton have released ticket details for their Carabao Cup fourth-round meeting with Newcastle United at the Hill Dickinson on Thursday, 29 October.

Newcastle have been allocated 7,732 tickets, close to 15 per cent of the stadium’s capacity, for a game which will send the winners into the quarter-finals.

James Garner has already spoken about Everton’s determination to make a serious cup run this season after the 1-0 third-round victory over Wolves.

Benjamin makes his mark against senior opposition

Omari Benjamin scored for Everton Under-21s against National League leaders Boreham Wood on Wednesday night before converting the opening penalty as the young Blues won the National League Cup tie 4-2 in the shootout.

Benjamin remains some distance from Moyes’s first-team plans, but the 20-year-old is one of the next natural centre-forwards in Everton’s development ranks.

That is worth noting with Thierno Barry the only specialist senior No.9 currently available to Moyes, who has also been considering Charly Alcaraz as an alternative through the middle.

Robertson reveals failed £750,000 Everton move

Andy Robertson has revealed Everton tried to sign him from Dundee United for £750,000 in January 2014.

Roberto Martinez had travelled to watch the then 19-year-old and Robertson says the plan was for him to remain at Dundee United on loan before eventually competing with Leighton Baines at Goodison Park.

Dundee United valued him at £1.5m and the move didn’t happen. Robertson joined Hull City later that year before moving to Liverpool in 2017.

O’Brien and Johnson start Everton’s international break

Jake O’Brien and Brennan Johnson are the first Everton players due to be involved during the international break, with the Republic of Ireland facing Kosovo and Wales travelling to Portugal tonight.

Both Nations League matches kick off at 7.45pm UK time, shortly after this round-up is published.

Jordan Pickford, Jarrad Branthwaite and James Garner are with England, while several more Everton players have senior and age-group international commitments over the coming fortnight.
