Chelsea tried to retaliate against Liverpool when they signed Rio Ngumoha by targeting a bunch of young players.
After eight years, Rio Ngumoha left Chelsea for Liverpool, inspired by dreams of a pathway to a starting role at Anfield, which he is now well on his way to achieving.
The signing of Bradley Barcola will make it harder for him to get into the Liverpool starting lineup, but if he really is good enough, it will also push him to new levels.
However, Chelsea felt spurned when Ngumoha moved to Liverpool, with the Blues effectively helpless to prevent him from moving to Anfield.
According to the Daily Mail‘s Lewis Steele, Chelsea were so frustrated that they had lost Ngumoha to Liverpool, they “tried to retaliate by targeting several youngsters in Liverpool’s academy.”
This is Anfield‘s Jack Lusby writes that previous reports even indicated that Liverpool scouts were banned from attending games at Chelsea’s training ground, Cobham.
Ngumoha has since flourished at Liverpool and has now made 35 appearances for the senior team and is also on the verge of signing a new contract with the Reds to end speculation over his future. Andoni Iraola is also the perfect coach to elevate his game as an attacker.
Recent months have seen an uptick in reports linking Ngumoha to Bayern Munich, but that talk has been diminishing of late, particularly since the summer transfer window closed.
On 3 September, Graeme Bailey reported that Liverpool and Ngumoha were “rapidly accelerating towards an announcement” over a new deal to keep him at the club long-term.

Then this week, Football Insider reported that Liverpool are desperate to keep Ngumoha.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, Pete O’Rourke explained: “Obviously, Liverpool are desperate to keep hold of Ngumoha, and the player himself, I understand, is happy at Liverpool as well and is set to get regular starts this season.
“When you get top young players like this, they’re always going to attract interest from other clubs, but Liverpool are confident that his long-term future will be at Anfield…there is optimism I think on both sides that they can get this deal agreed.”
