Tottenham are plotting a move for rising Dutch sensation.
Tottenham Hotspur have made a disastrous start to the 2026/27 Premier League campaign.
The north London club are at the foot of the table with just two points from five matches. They have scored only two goals in those games. This is despite the signings of Savio, Mykhailo Mudryk and Omar Marmoush.
With Roberto De Zerbi having no plans for Richarlison, Dominic Solanke and Marmoush are the two senior recognised strikers in the Tottenham squad at the moment. However, the duo haven’t done anything notable this season thus far, prompting Spurs to invest in a new striker when the transfer window reopens.
Also, the lack of creativity continues to be a concern. Mohammed Kudus has looked understandably rusty in recent outings after returning from a long-term quad injury, while James Maddison isn’t yet ready to start games for Tottenham following his last year’s ACL injury. Meanwhile, Xavi Simons remains out for the foreseeable future with an ACL rupture.
Tottenham eye move for Feyenoord midfielder
With so many creative talents either getting up to full fitness or sidelined, Tottenham have unsurprisingly struggled in the final third.
Now, according to a report from TEAMtalk, Tottenham are one of six Premier League clubs keen on signing Feyenoord midfielder Gjivai Zechiel. Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea and Nottingham Forest are all understood to be chasing the 22-year-old’s signature.
Following loan spells with Sparta Rotterdam and Utrecht, Gjivai Zechiel returned to Feyenoord earlier this summer and has quickly established himself as one of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s most influential players. The Rotterdam-born talent has enjoyed a sizzling start to the campaign, with five goals and four assists in seven Eredivisie appearances, thereby catching the attention of a host of clubs in the Premier League and Europe.
A central midfielder by trade, the former Netherlands Under-21 international can also operate in a deeper role or push further forward as an advanced playmaker. He is excellent at making late runs in the box and finishing off moves, with his five goals this season illustrating his goalscoring instincts. Zechiel is also creative, capable of finding incisive passes through the lines to split open opposition defences.
The report adds that the Feyenoord talent has received his first call-up to the senior Netherlands squad for the UEFA Nations League games. This further enhances the young midfielder’s reputation at the global stage.
Gjivai Zechiel’s stocks are rising
The Lilywhites are currently monitoring Zechiel due to his skill and composure following the talented midfielder’s superb start to the new season. Spurs might need to act quickly if they are to land the Dutchman in the coming months.
Chelsea are leading the race for the midfield sensation in January and are ready to table a bid that matches Feyenoord’s asking price for the player. He is a dynamic midfielder who can make an impact at both ends of the pitch, and given the lack of such a profile in De Zerbi’s roster, Tottenham must try their best to beat bitter rivals Chelsea to Zechiel’s services.
