Tottenham have endured their worst start to a Premier League season.
Last weekend, Tottenham Hotspur scored twice against Aston Villa in a 3-2 defeat, and they were their first Premier League goals this season.
Significant summer spending hasn’t translated into positive results on the pitch, leaving Roberto De Zerbi under early pressure. It has sharpened the disappointment within the N17 fanbase, with new signings failing to gel thus far.
Two points amassed from five games reflect an underwhelming start to the season, and the concern is the gap between that return and the club’s ambitions. Roberto De Zerbi’s attempt to establish greater control through possession needs results to give it credibility. After getting backed to the hilt in the transfer market, the Italian manager has to turn the tide in N17.
Ex-scout makes big claim on the future of Tottenham star if things don’t improve under De Zerbi
Should results fail to improve after the international break, former scout Mick Brown thinks Liverpool could revive their interest in Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven.
Micky van de Ven signed for Spurs from Wolfsburg in the summer of 2023 and has since become one of the most sought-after defenders in the Premier League. After a near-disastrous last season, the Netherlands international’s future was well and truly up in the air. For once, it looked like he would depart Tottenham after three seasons.
Liverpool were among several clubs interested in signing the 25-year-old. However, Van de Ven eventually stayed at the club and penned a new contract. Now, though, Mick Brown has tipped the Reds to return for Van de Ven if Spurs continue to struggle in the Premier League.
“Van de Ven is somebody who has been on Liverpool’s radar for a long time,” Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider.
“He’s certainly somebody who would fit the bill when they’re looking to replace Van Dijk, because he’s left-sided, physically dominant, and he’s the captain at Tottenham too.
“I do have my concerns because he’s been a big part of the Spurs side that has really struggled, but his individual talent is clear, so Liverpool could rescue him from that nightmare. He certainly ticks a lot of boxes, and if Tottenham continue to struggle, then I expect a move to Liverpool will be appealing for him.
“Obviously, Spurs aren’t going to want to lose one of their best players to a Premier League rival, but they might struggle to keep him if they stay near the bottom of the table.”
Van de Ven remains committed to Tottenham
Van de Ven was named the club’s captain following the departure of Cristian Romero in August. His elevation to the captaincy role comes as part of a structured overhaul of the dressing room hierarchy under De Zerbi. By selecting the 25-year-old as Romero’s successor, De Zerbi has placed ultimate faith in the Netherlands international to lead by example both on and off the pitch.
The central defender revealed his excitement about his new role, signing a new contract and the club’s ambitious summer rebuild. Van de Ven agreeing to fresh terms and embracing the Italian tactician’s methods underlines his conviction that Tottenham are heading in the right direction and building a project aligned with his personal ambitions.
