Chelsea reportedly remain interested in Giorgio Scalvini despite the defender agreeing fresh long-term terms with Atalanta.
The Blues were among several Premier League clubs to enquire about the Italy international during the summer transfer window.
Atalanta refused to sanction a departure and have now moved to strengthen their position further by agreeing a new contract with the 22-year-old.
That has not ended Chelsea’s interest.
Chelsea retain Giorgio Scalvini interest
Chelsea and Tottenham both made enquiries about Scalvini during the summer, while Newcastle United have also pursued the centre-back, according to TEAMtalk’s latest update on his future.
Scalvini has now agreed terms on a deal running until 2031.
However, the report claims Chelsea remain keen despite that development, suggesting the new contract has not completely closed the door on a future Premier League move.
There is no indication that Chelsea have submitted a new bid or opened negotiations ahead of January.
Scalvini remains an important first-team player for Atalanta and has also been included in Italy’s squad for the September international fixtures.
Chelsea defensive questions remain despite summer options
Interest in another centre-back is notable because Xabi Alonso already has several options available.
Chelsea finished the summer with Levi Colwill, Maxence Lacroix, Wesley Fofana, Josh Acheampong and Aaron Anselmino among their recognised central defenders.
However, Alonso’s preferred centre-back numbers have not yet translated into defensive stability.
