Chelsea are one of a number of elite clubs to have taken an interest in RB Leipzig centre-back Castello Lukeba ahead of a possible move, according to reports. But the Frenchman’s stated wish to play in Spain threatens to scupper any Premier League pursuit of his signature.
Arsenal, Manchester United and Barcelona are also keeping a close eye on the 23-year-old’s situation. Hansi Flick is reportedly considering the left-footed defender as the ideal player to fit into Barca’s aggressive high defensive line. Lukeba would agree to a move to Catalonia, according to reports in Spain, although Leipzig have not yet received any formal proposals.
The Bundesliga side are said to be holding out for a guaranteed fee of around €60m, with add-ons potentially taking the package to €65m. Lukeba’s contract runs until June 2029, giving Leipzig plenty of leverage in negotiations. Leipzig are not keen to allow a mid-season exit, while a previously reported release clause has also expired.
Lukeba arrived from boyhood club Lyon in 2023 for €30m plus bonuses. Since then, he has developed into one of Europe’s most sought-after young defenders. The Frenchman has one senior France cap and an Olympic silver medal from the Paris 2024 Games.
He was important to Leipzig last season with 26 Bundesliga appearances, 25 of which were starts. The club’s strong track record of developing French defenders, including Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate, has also boosted his reputation.
Chelsea’s defender’s composure in possession and recovery pace would seem well suited to the three-man defensive structure of Xabi Alonso. Barcelona’s financial struggles, though, could give a Premier League club an opening as the Catalan giants are said to have found Leipzig’s valuation too high for a centre-back.
Chelsea’s Clean Sheet Drought Points To Need For Defensive Reinforcement
Reports of Chelsea’s interest in Lukeba come amid a spell of defensive fragility at Stamford Bridge. Alonso’s side have now gone 21 consecutive Premier League matches without keeping a clean sheet.
That unwanted run was extended with last Friday’s emphatic 3-0 defeat to West London neighbours Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and substitute Fabio Carvalho all scored in the second half and condemned the Blues to a third successive league game without victory.
Despite signing Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa in the summer, Chelsea have conceded 10 goals in their last four games in all competitions. Next up for Alonso’s men is Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on October 10. The Spaniard will be seeking evidence that his rearguard’s long-standing frailties have finally been addressed.
