Why Everton could appeal to Tyler Morton if January race develops

**Everton won’t be alone if their reported interest in Tyler Morton develops into something more serious.**

The former Liverpool midfielder is attracting attention after an impressive start to life with Lyon, with [Everton](https://readeverton.com/) named among a sizeable group of Premier League clubs keeping an eye on him ahead of January.

Liverpool, Newcastle, Brighton, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and Sunderland have also been linked. There is no suggestion at this stage that Everton have made an approach, or that Morton has indicated where he would prefer to play next.

But Everton would have a case to make if it ever gets that far.

Morton left Liverpool because he had reached the point where he needed to play. Loans with Blackburn and Hull gave him senior experience, but leaving Anfield permanently allowed him to establish himself at Lyon rather than spend another season waiting for opportunities.

That should be relevant if he returns to the Premier League.

There would certainly be competition at Everton. Hayden Hackney, James Garner, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Harrison Armstrong already give David Moyes several midfield options, so there would be no sense in presenting Morton as an automatic starter.

What Everton could offer is a realistic chance to earn a significant role in a side that is still developing. At 23, Morton is also at an age where sitting behind a collection of established internationals at a bigger club may hold less appeal than playing regularly.

Merseyside is another obvious part of the equation. Morton is from Wallasey and came through Liverpool’s academy, so joining Everton would allow him to return home without simply going back to the club he left in search of football.

His age would fit much of Everton’s recent recruitment too. Hackney, Thierno Barry and Tyler Dibling have all arrived with the bulk of their careers ahead of them, while Armstrong has been given his opportunity from the academy.

There are clubs on the reported list who could offer Morton things Everton can’t, and Lyon would have their own say before any decision was required.

For Everton, the attraction is fairly straightforward. If Morton decides to return to England, Moyes could offer Premier League football close to home and a genuine opportunity to compete for an important role. For a player who left Liverpool because he wanted to play, that’s a reasonable place to start.
