Tyson Bagent has looked like one of the league’s better backups since entering the league as an undrafted free agent, but the quarterback may not be able to fill in for the injured Caleb Williams. Originally joining the Bears following the 2023 NFL Draft, the Shepherd product has made a few starts over the years while serving as the team’s primary backup. While nobody would confuse him with a franchise quarterback, he can keep an offense afloat for short periods of time and was good enough to justify a two-year, $10 million extension in 2025.
With Caleb Williams down, Tyson Bagent was supposed to suit up and carry the Chicago Bears for the time being. However, the backup quarterback suffered a concussion while filling in for the former first-overall pick last week and may not be ready to play in Week 3. While Bagent does not yet carry an official designation, the quarterback was a “DNP,” or “Did Not Participate,” on the team’s official injury report.

Tyson Bagent Injury Update: Bears QB Missed Practice, May Not Play
Needless to say, this is terrible news for the Chicago Bears. Losing Caleb Williams is obviously the biggest problem, but Tyson Bagent could have kept the team afloat for a little while. Anything can happen between now and Sunday, but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport noted that “all signs point to Case Keenum” making the start.
Keenum, of couse, is a long-time veteran who has made quite a few starts since entering the league as an undrafted free agent. Appearing in games for seven different franchises, Keenum’s best year likely came in 2017 with the Minnesota Vikings. Taking over for an injured Sam Bradford, the quarterback started 14 games, going 11-3 while completing 67.6% of his passes for 3,547 yards, 22 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He’s made 66 starts throughout his 11-year career, including two last year with the Houston Texans.
