Italian forward Federico Chiesa is set to leave Liverpool this January. Both the player and the club are now ready to part ways once the winter transfer window opens for business, as per latest news.
Andoni Iraola set to sanction Federico Chiesa exit
As reported by CalcioMercato, Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola has quietly accepted that Federico Chiesa’s time on Merseyside is coming to an end. That said, a January exit now looks like the most realistic outcome for everyone involved.
Chiesa arrived at Anfield from Juventus in the summer of 2024. The move was widely seen as a smart piece of business at the time. The Reds paid just around €11m, plus €2.9m in bonuses for a player who had already proven himself as one of the finest wingers in Italian football during that time. Serie A fans could not believe their prized asset had left for such a modest fee. Since then, though, things have not gone to plan.
Persistent injury setbacks have robbed Chiesa of rhythm, while increasing competition for places has left him fighting for playing time. Across his entire Liverpool career so far, the Italian has made only 50 appearances, scoring five goals and providing five assists.
He still has a contract running until the summer of 2028, yet the CalcioMercato’s report insists that a mid-season split is now looking increasingly likely. In addition, both sides are quietly working toward the same thing behind the scenes at the club.
Chiesa’s 2025/26 stats at Liverpool, as per FOTMOB:
Competitions Appearances Minutes Played Goals Assists
Premier League 26 318 2 1
FA Cup 3 150 0 0
EFL Cup 2 180 0 2
Champions League 5 78 1 0
Injuries and squad competition pushes winger out
Chiesa’s struggles have gone beyond simple bad luck, and just how far down the pecking order he has slipped. He was left out of the Reds’ Champions League squad for a second consecutive season. That was a decision that hit hard given his standing as a European champion with Italy.
Last season, he could only manage 3 goals and 3 assists across 36 appearances. The arrivals of Bradley Barcola and Victor Munoz this summer have added new depth to the wide areas. It is being said that academy graduate Lewis Koumas now sits ahead of him in Iraola’s plans as well.
Liverpool are already seeing Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh as a possible new option. Premier League football moves quickly, and patience for players stuck outside the club’s plans rarely lasts long once options start appearing in the transfer market.

Serie A clubs showing keen interest
Interest from Italy has grown steadily, with Napoli and Inter are among the clubs monitoring his situation closely. Meanwhile, Roma, Atalanta and Bologna are possible suitors too. Liverpool are said to be seeking a fee of at least €15m. Although earlier talk of a cut price release closer to €25m shows just how flexible the club may be to complete the move.
Federico Chiesa reportedly earns close to €7m a year net, a wage that will need careful structuring for any move to actually happen. A return to Serie A would give the player the regular football he needs to rebuild his career and rediscover his place in the Italy squad. For Liverpool, moving him on would free up space and wages to reinvest elsewhere.
