Chelsea FC face FA Rule E21 charge over Fulham match
Chelsea have been charged by the FA. The charge relates to alleged discriminatory chanting by their supporters during the ninth minute of the Premier League match at Fulham on 24 August 2026. The Chelsea FC FA charge concerns a breach of FA Rule E21, which covers the conduct of a club’s spectators.
The FA says Chelsea failed to stop supporters behaving in an improper, offensive or abusive way at Craven Cottage. It adds that the chanting carried a discriminatory reference to religion or belief.
FA charge details and official club response
The FA laid out the charge in an official statement. It read: “Chelsea FC has been charged with breaching FA Rule E21 during the ninth minute of its Premier League fixture against Fulham FC on 24 August. It’s alleged that the club failed to ensure its spectators and/or supporters did not behave in an improper, offensive, abusive or insulting way. It’s further alleged that this behaviour was discriminatory in that it included a reference, whether expressed or implied, to religion or belief.”
Chelsea had already acted before the FA stepped in. Club officials became aware of a sectarian chant sung by travelling fans. They emailed supporters, warning them against singing songs of that nature again. Xabi Alonso debut background and supporter warnings
The Fulham fixture marked Xabi Alonso’s first match in charge of Chelsea. The club won it, handing the new manager his first victory. Those celebrations at Craven Cottage have now been overshadowed by the disciplinary charge.
Chelsea’s email to fans made no mention of the FA charge itself. It was sent before the governing body confirmed its involvement. It read: “Dear supporter, thank you for your fantastic support during our opening Premier League fixture of the season against Fulham. The whole team and manager recognised your contribution to helping secure our first win of the campaign.” The club thanked fans for backing the team while quietly flagging the chanting concern in the same message.

Next steps and response deadline for Chelsea FC
Chelsea now have to respond to the charge. The club can accept the FA’s findings, or contest them at a disciplinary hearing. No date has been confirmed by either side. Chelsea have not yet said publicly which route they will take.
