Liverpool continue to be linked with a move for “incredible” Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, with journalist James Pearce talking up their interest.

The 22-year-old emerged as a leading midfield option for the Reds during the summer transfer window, as supporters desperately hoped to see additions made in that position. He ended up staying put, though.

Journalist Abdel Hamed was among those to talked up Liverpool’s admiration for Camara, saying: “Regarding Camara and Balogun, the offers are dragging on because the clubs are aware of Monaco’s situation and are waiting for the end of the transfer window. Liverpool, still on the hunt for a 6, would like to make a move for Camara at the last moment. For Balogun at 50 M in stoppage time, he could leave.”

Now, The Athletic‘s Pearce has claimed that the Reds “retain a strong interest” in the Senegal international, who “would have been their top target if they had pursued a midfielder in the summer.”

In the end, Liverpool “decided to stick with what they had, as they backed academy teenager Trey Nyoni to step up”, but it looks as though incoming sporting director Julian Ward could be tasked with bringing him to Anfield in 2027.

Lamine Camara should still be Liverpool’s No.1 midfield target

Not signing a midfielder in the summer felt like a big gamble by Liverpool, and while Alexis Mac Allister has been much improved, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai have struggled in a double pivot.

Similarly, Trey Nyoni is a huge young talent who looks the part, but he is still a work in progress and can’t be expected to be starting Premier League matches regularly.

Camara would be the perfect addition for Liverpool, whether that be in January or next summer, bringing the natural defensive quality that others struggle to in the middle of the park.

He is a huge player for both Senegal and Monaco, covering ground and using the ball well, and teammate Denis Zakaria has heaped praise on him in recent days, saying:

“I know the player and the person that he is; he is very professional. I think that [the transfer saga] has given him even more strength. He was incredible today.”

There is almost nothing not to like about Camara, with the Senegalese still a young player who should only improve, and he feels tailor-made to thrive in an all-action Andoni Iraola side.

This season, he has completed 91.9% of his passes across five Ligue 1 matches, but most striking is the fact that he has averaged an incredible 5.2 tackles per game.

That is a remarkable statistic that highlights what a tenacious presence Camara is when it comes to winning the back ball – in comparison, Liverpool’s top players in that area in 2026/27 to date are Jeremy Jacquet and Mac Allister (both 2.2.).

It remains to be seen if the Monaco man would be available in January, but if not, the Reds must do all they can to sign him at the end of the season, in what would be a great coup for Ward.
