Liverpool will be waiting with more interest than most to see what becomes of Manchester City’s guilty verdict.
Three-and-a-half years on from receiving their 115 charges relating to breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations, City has finally been found guilty of all but one of those charges, with the repercussions potentially having a massive impact not just at the Etihad Stadium, but further afield.
The Reds will be among the many clubs keeping a close eye on developments now. Liverpool is just one of the sides that could pursue financial compensation, with early reports suggesting around $132 million could be claimed as a result of the breaches.
According to The Athletic, no sanctions have yet been handed down to City, and the club is expected to appeal the verdict. Nevertheless, all possibilities remain on the table.
That could well include City being stripped of titles. Should that be the case, Liverpool fans will be among those hoping they’re redistributed.
Were that the case, the Reds would be in line to claim another Premier League crown, having finished second and just two points behind City in the 2013/14 season. Liverpool isn’t the only club that could benefit, with Manchester United also potentially in line to be awarded more titles, having finished second to City in the 2011/12 and 2017/18 seasons.

However, previous incidents in which clubs have had titles stripped would suggest that Liverpool and United might not necessarily get their hands on them.
The prospect of City having titles taken away from it will of course conjur memories of the Calciopoli scandal in Italy during the mid-2000s.
Some of Italy’s biggest teams were reprimanded in that case in 2006 which involved allegations of refereeing appointments being manipulated, among other accusations.
It resulted in a major upheaval in Italian soccer, with Juventus, AC Milan, Fiorentina, Lazio and Reggina all receiving punishments. The first of those clubs was hit the hardest, with Juve being stripped of its 2004/05 Serie A title, while also being relegated in the 2005/06 campaign after finishing top of the table again.

While the 2004/05 title was taken away from Juventus, it wasn’t passed on to another club, which would have seen Milan crowned champion after finishing second. The 2005/06 title was handed to Inter Milan though, with the San Siro club promoted to first place as a result of Juve’s demotion.
Although no sanctions have yet been handed down to City, the Calciopoli case does show that titles may not necessarily be handed over to other clubs when they are stripped - though it should also be noted that Milan, who would have benefited in the 2004/05 season, were also punished in the scandal, having been deducted 30 points from the 2005/06 campaign.
Liverpool fans will likely have to wait longer to find out what City’s guilty verdict could mean for the Reds, with the expected appeal almost certain to delay any potential punishments now.
