Blues Monitoring Uzbek Centre-Back Amid Defensive Concerns
Chelsea are said to be tracking Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov as Enzo Maresca looks to strengthen his backline options, according to Caught Offside.
The 22-year-old has enjoyed a rapid rise through the ranks since leaving Bunyodkor’s academy. He began his senior career at Belarusian outfit Energetik-BGU in 2022, before his displays in the Vysshaya Liga persuaded Ligue 1 club RC Lens to snap him up a year later.
His form in France soon caught City’s eye, and the Etihad club moved to secure his signature last year. Since then, however, Khusanov has largely been used as a squad option under Pep Guardiola, despite playing a part in a couple of domestic cup triumphs. Internationally, he remains a first-choice pick for Uzbekistan.
Chelsea Could Face Competition for Khusanov
Caught Offside claim Chelsea have identified Khusanov as a genuine January target after a shaky start to the campaign defensively, though the report suggests at least three other Premier League sides are also keeping tabs on him.
Valued at roughly £43m by Transfermarkt and tied to a contract until 2031, City are under no pressure to sell, which could complicate any approach.
Standing at 6ft 1in and predominantly right-footed, Khusanov offers versatility across the back four, capable of playing centre-back or right-back. His pace, composure on the ball and defensive discipline make him an appealing profile for a side wanting to build from the back.
In my view, a player of his athleticism and ball-playing ability would represent smart business for Chelsea, particularly given his age and long-term potential. Whether Maresca’s side can convince City to sanction a sale in January remains the bigger question.
Chelsea, meanwhile, opened their season with wins over Fulham and Brighton, but have picked up just one point from their following three league outings heading into the international break.
