‘Two of the Best’ — Jerry Jones Praises Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark After Cowboys’ Defensive Overhaul 1

Jerry Jones is not backing away from the Dallas Cowboys’ decision to strengthen the middle of their defense. The Cowboys have allowed plenty of rushing yards through the first two games; however, their owner still believes the team has the right pieces at defensive tackle to build around.

That confidence comes with a major test approaching. The Cowboys are preparing to face Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry in Week 3, putting even more pressure on Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark to help clean up the Cowboys’ issues against the run. Jones, however, sees the two veterans as a major part of what Dallas is trying to build.

Jones spoke about Williams and Clark during his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan, with the Cowboys preparing for their matchup against the Baltimore Ravens in Brazil. Rather than pointing to the struggles in the run game, Jones focused on what the two defensive tackles give the Cowboys in the middle.

“I wouldn’t want to go without them. They’re two of the best. We wanted to muscle-up in the middle. For several years we’ve been a little light in there. Quinnen is key to that. Kenny is right there with him. The strength of our defense is in there.

I feel very good about what it looks like for this season on the inside.”

The comments are being made during a time that is interesting for the Cowboys. Through two games, the Cowboys have allowed 347 rushing yards, putting them among the worst in the NFL. In their Week 2 matchup against the Washington Commanders, despite coming out with a 37-20 win, the Cowboys’ defense had to surrender many rushing yards.

Some of those yards were gained by Jayden Daniels after he went down with an injury. Rachaad White and Jacory Croskey-Merritt contributed in the running back position to total 86 rushing yards. That performance kept the questions around the Cowboys’ run defense alive heading into a much tougher challenge.

Williams and Clark will now have to deal with a Baltimore offense that can attack defenses in several ways. Henry gives the Ravens a powerful option between the tackles, while Jackson can create another problem when a play breaks down. The Cowboys have already struggled against mobile QBs this season, making the defensive tackles’ ability to control the middle even more important.

Williams has seven tackles, two quarterback hits, a tackle for loss, and a forced fumble through two games. Clark has recorded five tackles and one quarterback hit. Their individual numbers do not tell the full story of how Dallas uses them; however, the Cowboys clearly view both players as foundational pieces.

The Cowboys still have work to do. Their run defense has not matched the expectations surrounding the revamped interior, and facing Henry and Jackson leaves little room for another loose performance.
