Gakpo’s stoppage-time strike denies Klopp winning Germany debut

AMSTERDAM  -  Cody Gakpo struck a stoppage-time equaliser as the Netherlands rescued a 1-1 draw against Germany, denying new German coach Jurgen Klopp a winning start in the Nations League. Germany, led by former Liverpool manager Klopp for the first time since his appointment in July, took the lead through Felix Nmecha in the 32nd minute after a fast-paced opening. The visitors were also forced to cope with injuries to Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz. The Netherlands, under new coach Xavi Hernandez, pressed for an equaliser after the break and repeatedly tested Germany goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Their pressure finally paid off when Gakpo finished a swift counter-attack in stoppage time. Germany had earlier seen a Virgil van Dijk header ruled out by VAR for a foul on ter Stegen. Elsewhere, Erling Haaland scored twice, including the 74th-minute winner, as Norway edged Denmark 3-2 in Oslo. Portugal opened their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Wales, Joao Felix scoring the decisive goal.
