Darnold set to return
Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold will play Sunday against the Washington Commanders after he missed Seattle's last game with a glute injury he suffered in the season opener. Coach Mike Macdonald announced Darnold's return on Friday. Darnold was injured on the Seahawks' first series of their season-opening 13-10 victory over the New England Patriots. Drew Lock took over and started last Sunday's 31-7 win at Arizona. Darnold did not miss a game last season as he led the Seahawks to a Super Bowl title. He threw for 4,048 yards with 25 touchdowns and 14 interceptions as Seattle won a franchise-record 14 regular-season games. There were worries after Darnold was sacked by New England's Dre'Mont Jones in the opener. Darnold sought treatment on the sidelines before limping to the locker room and heading to the hospital. At first, Darnold was believed to have a hip injury but an MRI later ruled that out. He returned to practice Wednesday. Macdonald also said Friday that safety Julian Love would not play at the Commanders after his calf tightened up during practice Thursday. Love has had interceptions in each of the Seahawks' first two games. Macdonald did not know how long Love would be out.
Tebow pauses ties
Tim Tebow said Friday he is "pausing his relationship" with Life Surge, a Christian organization that's been accused of using predatory sales tactics to exploit its followers' faith and financial insecurity. Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner who is currently a college football analyst with ESPN's SEC Nation, said his team is conducting an internal investigation. He spoke on campus Saturday in advance of the Mississippi-Florida game in Gainesville, Fla. "The allegations are extremely, extremely serious, and it's something that we take very serious," Tebow said. "So, for us, we're having our team do an investigation, but also pausing our relationship until we can learn more about the facts to be able to understand more." Tebow said he was "caught off guard" by the "Pablo Torre Finds Out" podcast that focused partly on Tebow's speaking engagements with Life Surge. The podcast's investigation raised questions about Tebow's knowledge of the organization's practices. Life Surge, which hosts around 30 events annually, typically brings in Christian celebrities like Tebow to headline events. At Life Surge's one-day events, attendees are urged to sign up for impact classes that pitch packages ranging from $10,000 to $40,000, according to the podcast. If attendees can't afford the price tag, Life Surge reportedly connects them with third-party lenders who encourage them to apply for credit cards or take out home-equity loans, according to the podcast.
Bosa out a few weeks
San Francisco 49ers pass rusher Nick Bosa injured his calf warming up for practice earlier this week and will miss a few games. Coach Kyle Shanahan said Bosa got hurt before practice on Thursday doing "high knees." Shanahan said Friday that the injury wasn't believed to be long term but he would likely miss a few weeks starting with Sunday's game against Arizona. The injury is the latest to the 49ers, who are missing seven players on the defensive line this week, including Mykel Williams working his way back from knee surgery last year. Defensive end Sam Okuayinonu broke his foot just before the Niners left for the season opener in Australia and is expected to miss most, if not all, of the season. Defensive tackle Alfred Collins went down with a season-ending knee injury in practice in Australia. Defensive tackle C.J. West was placed on injured reserve this week after undergoing surgery for bone chips in his knee, and fellow defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. has been ruled out for at least a few weeks after leaving last week's game with a high ankle sprain. Rookie defensive end Romello Height had surgery on a broken hand this week and will also miss this week's game.
WR Collins to sit again
Houston receiver Nico Collins will sit out his second consecutive game due to a hamstring injury when the Texans visit the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Collins didn't practice this week and the team ruled him out on Friday. Collins also missed last week's 20-6 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. The two-time Pro Bowl selection sustained the injury during practice on Sept. 16. Collins missed five games during the 2024 season due to a more serious hamstring injury. Collins, 27, made 7 catches for 75 yards and 1 touchdown in Houston's 36-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills in the season opener prior to getting hurt. Collins is one of five Texans ruled out for the game in Indianapolis. The others are defensive end Jadeveon Clowney (knee), linebacker Jake Hummel (groin), safety M.J. Stewart (knee) and guard Ed Ingram (groin). Also, offensive tackle Trent Brown (knee/wrist) is questionable.

Giles dies at 92
Bill Giles, who rose from a Philadelphia Phillies business executive to become an owner and CEO during more than a half-century with the team, died Friday at his home in Gladwyne, Pa. He was 92. A son of former National League president Warren Giles, Bill Giles started with the team in 1969 as vice president, business operations, and was promoted to executive vice president three years later. In 1981, he organized a group that purchased the club from the Carpenter family. He served as president and CEO until 1997, then became chairman. He shifted to chairman emeritus in 2015, a title he held at the time of his death. The Phillies honored Giles with a moment of silence before Friday's game against Tampa Bay. Philadelphia had just four winning seasons during Giles' time as CEO but went to the World Series in two of them. Giles also played a major role in building the Phillies team that won the World Series in 1980, including convincing former owner Ruly Carpenter to sign free agent Pete Rose.

Grizzlies waive Russell
The Memphis Grizzlies waived guard D'Angelo Russell on Friday ahead of training camp and signed Brendan Hausen as the franchise continues its latest rebuild with young players. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, Russell landed in Memphis when he was included by Washington in a six-team, 11-player trade in July. Russell, 30, has played in 655 games over 11 NBA seasons with Los Angeles, Brooklyn, Golden State, Minnesota and Dallas. The former Iowa guard Hausen, 22, went undrafted this year.
