Details are scarce at the moment, but Jamie Gittens has suffered an ankle injury in last night’s England U21 qualifier, and initial indications are that it’s unfortunately not a minor concern.
The 22-year-old was spotted on crutches after the game, though manager Lee Carsley only confirmed that it was an ankle problem and that the young winger was getting sent back to Chelsea for further evaluation.
Gittens started the U21 Euros qualifier against Kazakhstan, and was apparently playing quite well before being forced off late in the first half. (He was replaced by former Chelsea prospect Tyrique George.) The injury is doubly unfortunate as Gittens has been struggling at club level and he’s barely featured at all so far this season. And last season wasn’t exactly great either, following his big-money move from Borussia Dortmund.
Hopefully the injury isn’t too bad; get well soon, Jamie!
(England U21 would go on to win, 4-2, with Josh Acheampong getting on the scoresheet and Strasbourg’s Sam Amo-Ameyaw also featuring off the bench.)
