Everton points deductions raised as Man City punishment debate grows

Everton’s points deductions have returned to the spotlight following reports that Manchester City have been found guilty of the vast majority of the Premier League charges against them.

The Everton comparison was raised by football account RazedFootball, which pointed to the sporting sanctions previously imposed on the Blues and Nottingham Forest and argued that any eventual punishment for City should reflect the scale of the breaches reportedly proven.

Everton were deducted a total of eight points during the 2023/24 Premier League season across two separate Profitability and Sustainability Rules cases.

Their first punishment was initially a 10-point deduction before being reduced to six on appeal. A further two points were subsequently taken away following another admitted PSR breach.

Nottingham Forest were also deducted four points during the same season after breaching the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules.

Everton sanctions return to spotlight after City reports

Those cases have inevitably become reference points in the reaction to the latest developments involving City, although there are significant differences between the cases and no City sanction has yet been announced.

The Guardian reported on Friday that an independent panel had found Manchester City guilty of almost all of the more than 100 charges brought against them by the Premier League.

The commission’s judgment has not yet been published, however, while City insist the process remains ongoing and say significant elements are still to be completed. The club maintains its innocence and is expected to appeal the reported findings.

That leaves any comparison over the eventual punishment premature.

Everton’s experience nevertheless explains why their supporters are taking a close interest. The Blues lost eight Premier League points after their two PSR cases, with the independent commission in the second case stating that a PSR breach was significant and required a sporting sanction.

What happens to City will depend on the completion of a much larger and more complex process. Until the judgment, sanction and subsequent appeal process become clearer, Everton’s deductions provide context for the debate rather than a direct guide to what City will face.
