Viktor Gyokeres has ended his wait for a goal this season by scoring Sweden’s winner in their 2-1 Nations League victory over Romania.
The Arsenal striker started alongside Alexander Isak in Stockholm and struck two minutes before half-time to give Sweden all three points.
UEFA confirmed Gyokeres poached the decisive goal after Lucas Bergvall’s initial effort had been saved.
It was a timely moment for a forward still searching for his first Arsenal goal of the 2026/27 campaign.
Gyokeres delivers after difficult Arsenal start
Gyokeres has found opportunities limited under Mikel Arteta, with Kai Havertz generally preferred through the middle.
Sweden manager Graham Potter had already publicly backed the striker before the international break, with Read Arsenal covering Potter’s message to Gyokeres following his difficult club start.
His faith was rewarded against Romania.
beIN Sports reports that Gyokeres scored with his only shot, reacting quickest to convert the rebound.
The timing could prove significant for Arsenal.
Havertz has returned to London with a muscle injury, potentially opening an opportunity at centre-forward when the Premier League resumes against Leeds United.
One international goal will not settle Arteta’s selection debate.
It does, however, give Gyokeres exactly the confidence boost Potter hoped international duty could provide.
