Arsenal star officially makes international debut

A friendly cap does not close a door. A competitive one does. That is the difference that matters to two associations and to one teenager.

Northern Ireland can lose players to the Republic without extra eligibility tests. The other way is shut. So a first Nations League appearance is more than minutes.

Four minutes plus stoppage is enough to end the debate.

Ceadach O’Neill made his first competitive appearance for Northern Ireland in a 1-0 win in Georgia on Friday. The 18-year-old Arsenal forward came on with the score at 0-0 and stayed on through 10 minutes of added time.

He already had two senior caps, both in friendlies. That had left him free to switch to the Republic of Ireland. That route is now closed.

Daily Cannon notes that Northern Ireland had been concerned he could still be persuaded to change, despite the work put into his pathway.

Georgia were awarded a penalty for a slight tug by Dan Ballard. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s kick was saved by Pierce Charles. Shea Charles, the Fulham midfielder and Pierce’s brother, scored the winner in the 99th minute. Ballard later went off with what looked like a hamstring problem.

O’Neill was one of two academy players named in Arsenal’s list of 17 on senior international duty this break, alongside Gibraltar’s James Scanlon. He already had two caps before this trip. The Georgia game is the one that counts for allegiance.

There is no first-team timetable attached. He is an 18-year-old forward on the Hale End path, now a locked-in Northern Ireland international.

Michael O’Neill’s side are in League B with Hungary, Ukraine and Georgia. They host Hungary next and play Ukraine and Georgia again before the window closes.

For Arsenal the story is simpler than the politics. A teenager they listed among the senior call-ups has taken the step that ends a dual-nationality question. The minutes were few. The paperwork is finished.

A 99th-minute win on the road is Northern Ireland’s first Nations League victory away from home. O’Neill was on the pitch when it went in. That is the line that will sit next to his name from here.
