The new signing has endured an unfortunate start to his Tottenham career after joining from Chelsea on loan.
Tottenham Hotspur brought in several new players to improve upon back-to-back 17th-place finishes in the Premier League, experiencing a very busy summer window.
The North London club’s determination to compete at the top end of the Premier League table saw them back Roberto De Zerbi in the transfer market. They spent over £300m on ten new players during the summer, signalling a complete change in their transfer strategy. Spurs surprised the fans on the deadline day by signing Mykhailo Mudryk and Tosin Adarabioyo from Chelsea.
In July, Mykhailo Mudryk became available to play again after serving a 20-month doping ban. Xabi Alonso didn’t include him in his plans at Chelsea this season, which opened a window of opportunity for Roberto De Zerbi to persuade Tottenham to sign the Ukrainian international on a season-long loan with an option to buy.
The move to the north London club saw Mudryk reunite with De Zerbi, after previously working together at Shakhtar Donetsk.
Everton defender backs Mykhailo Mudryk to bounce back from injury disappointment
However, it’s been a frustrating start to life in N17 for Mudryk. After making his Spurs debut as a substitute in the 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest, the 25-year-old sustained an ankle injury in training. He is expected to be out for six to eight weeks and has already missed three games.
De Zerbi termed Mudryk’s injury as “stupid”. Now, Everton left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko has backed Mudryk to bounce back from his injury disappointment and make an impression at Tottenham. The defender is confident that his Ukrainian teammate will come back stronger.
“Honestly, I try not to read the news,” Mykolenko told Sport UA (h/t Sport Witness).
“I’m very happy for Misha that he’s back. It’s unfortunate that he got injured. But that’s our life in football – it’s part of our careers, and everyone gets injured at some point.”
“I’m sure he’ll come back stronger and be able to help us during the next training camp. I’m just glad he’s back. He can enjoy football with the team now, rather than just training individually.”
Mudryk got his first minutes of competitive action against Forest after 20 months out and was hopeful of building on it in the coming games, only for an unfortunate injury to rule him out for two months. The winger has already begun rehab in a bid to gain full fitness and return to action as quickly as possible. De Zerbi and the club’s medical department must not rush the Chelsea loanee and must allow him time to heal fully from an ankle problem.
