Chicago Bears legend Brian Urlacher was in the final two seasons of his Hall of Fame career when former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick entered the NFL. By the time the quarterback turned activist had become a household name, the Bears linebacker had retired.
As it turns out, there were multiple seasons after his career ended that Urlacher did not watch NFL football, and Kaepernick was the reason why.

Kaepernick, of course, became a divisive figure around the NFL due to his decision to protest police brutality against African Americans by kneeling for the National Anthem. It was a form of protest that was recommended to him by Nate Boyer, a former Green Beret and NFL player.
While a few players around the league supported the former 49ers quarterback, many others did not. While he was retired at that point, Urlacher recently stated that he would not have been one of Kaepernick’s supporters, and certainly would not have allowed that to happen on his team.
“Politics — I didn’t even know what I was (politically) back then. I didn’t care, man,” Urlacher said (via Fox News) “You can’t have the racial divide in the locker room. It’s just not going to work. If you do, your team is going to be s—.
“The thing with him taking a knee would have been really, really f——- hard for me to put up with in the locker room. That would have been something that would have probably been a line in the sand for me when it comes to stuff like that.
“I’d retired, so I was watching all this happen on TV, and we quit watching. There were probably two, two and a half, three years where we didn’t watch football. I was like, as long as this s—‘s taking place, I’m not watching. My wife was fully on board. She’s all about that as well. So we just didn’t watch pro football for a few years there because of all the s— that was going on.”
Kaepernick, 38, still believes that he is being blackballed by the NFL as he believes he could still contribute to a professional roster.
