**Virgil van Dijk has revealed that he has yet to have any fresh contract talks with Liverpool, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.**
Last week, my colleague [Henry Jackson covered the van Dijk contract latest](https://live4liverpool.com/liverpool-are-planning-exit-for-virgil-van-dijk-next-summer/), prompting some questions in me.
Before my questions run loose, let’s look at what the skipper said.
Speaking to reporters, with [The Athletic](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7622609/2026/09/24/julian-ward-liverpool-sporting-director-transfers-contracts/)‘s James Pearce in attendance, van Dijk laughed when asked about his future at the club.
_“Already?”_ he replied when asked if talks had been held yet about a potential extension to his deal.
_“No, I am just focusing on the present. There is nothing to report on that.”_
Virgil is too composed and experienced to give away any meaningful details in the press unless he planned to beforehand, but it does make me wonder…
Here is what I want to know:
* Are Liverpool, FSG and the new owners, 1892 Holdings, willing to offer van Dijk a new deal?
* Are talks planned at some point?
* Do they agree that van Dijk is still an elite player with little physical decline?
A new deal for van Dijk
-----------------------
The Dutchman is currently earning £400,000 per week, so that’s where negotiations will begin between van Dijk, his agents and Liverpool.
FSG are in a delicate position in their tenure as owners of Liverpool, having just agreed a 38% minority share sale to 1892 Holdings, a consortium featuring the likes of Amit Bhatia and Jeff Bezos.
So, anything that Fenway Sports Group does now has massive potential ramifications in their relationship with the new owners, so offering a 35-year-old a contract extension to a deal worth £20.8m per year is not something that happens overnight.
FSG still retains majority ownership and operational control, but in reality, these things aren’t black and white, and there will certainly be an added element in major decisions taken.
That said, I think it would be the right move and that I can see it happening.
Are talks planned even if they haven’t happened yet?
----------------------------------------------------
This is what I really want to know.
It’s just the start of the new season, and neither van Dijk nor the team and its manager have proved anything meaningful yet.
That said, I’d really love to know whether there are talks planned for later in the season or, at least, that there is the potential for such a conversation, because keeping van Dijk, particularly while young Jeremy Jacquet is proving capable of being his heir, is a must for Liverpool.
Does the club believe there is value in offering a 35-year-old van Dijk a new deal?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For context, van Dijk will be 36 when the 2027/28 season begins, and a lot can change in the space of time, particularly when any and all changes now have a bearing on how his career will end.
No matter what happens, Liverpool cannot recoup a transfer fee from van Dijk.
Unless they extend his deal for two years and sell him after one, there is no way for Liverpool to ‘sell’ van Dijk.
Therefore, the way I see it, the only way to get value from this situation is to keep van Dijk by extending his deal.
