‘I Have No Idea What’s Going On’ — Deion Sanders Sounds Off on Travis Hunter’s Usage 1
Travis Hunter’s second NFL season has started with a role that looks very different from what many expected when the Jacksonville Jaguars moved up to draft him No. 2 overall. He remains involved on defense, however, his offensive snaps have been almost nonexistent through two games.
Even Deion Sanders, who coached Hunter at Colorado, is still trying to understand the plan. Sanders knows what Hunter can do on both sides of the ball but what he doesn’t know is why the Jaguars have used him so sparingly.

On September 26, during his CBS Colorado show, Sanders said that he was not close enough to the Jaguars to know what happens behind the scenes. His comments came after Hunter played only four offensive snaps in Week 1 and six in Week 2.

The numbers explain why the conversation has picked up. Hunter played 29 defensive snaps against the Cleveland Browns while seeing only four on offense. One week later against the Denver Broncos, he logged 37 defensive snaps and six offensive snaps. He also went without a target in Week 2.
That is a far cry from the vision Hunter has always described. However, for now, the Jaguars appear to be taking a much more measured approach. Head coach Liam Coen said earlier this week that the Jaguars were looking for ways to involve Hunter more offensively after the offense struggled in Week 2. Hunter also said Friday that he would leave questions about his rotation to the coaches.
There is another side to the situation. According to Jonathan Jones on September 26, multiple Jaguars sources indicated that the team remains patient with Hunter and expects his role to grow as he gains experience and continues working back from his knee injury.
“I checked in with several sources in Duval and found a very patient group around the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner,” . He’ll help us win games this year and will continue to grow on both sides of the ball.” (Via Sporting News)
That patience is reflected in his workload. Hunter has played far more defensive snaps than offensive snaps this season, however, Jacksonville reportedly expects him to see more opportunities on both sides against the New England Patriots in Week 3.
So Sanders’ comments do not necessarily point to a looming change. They show how unusual Hunter’s current role looks compared with the two-way player who dominated at Colorado. The Jaguars still have time to build that role. For now, though, Hunter is getting only small doses of the offensive work that made him such a unique prospect.
