Jets' Geno Smith punished by NFL right before Lions game image
It's going to be a big Week 3 for the Detroit Lions and New York Jets, because these two franchises are coming together for a high-stakes game. What makes this game so unique, of course, is that it pits former Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn against his old team, including Lions head coach Dan Campbell.
There will be fireworks, for certain. Even though the Lions are favored, there's no telling what the Jets can do, and they're already shaping up to be a stronger team this year than they were last.
But, ahead of the game, the NFL is slapping Jets quarterback Geno Smith with a punishment. Each weekend, the NFL disciplines players for breaking the league's rules during the games the week before.
Geno Smith gets fined ahead of Jets-Lions showdown
Per the NFL's official website, the league "uses the fine schedule to outline the league's and the union's expectations for players to conduct themselves in a way that honors the sport and respects the game, themselves, their fellow players, the fans and the league."
On Saturday, Smith was fined $11,941 by the NFL for taunting during the team's game in Week 2 against the Packers. The incident happened in the third quarter, when he was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct following his touchdown pass.
The news came out in the NFL's official accountability report. So, it's a bit of a blemish as Smith and the team prepare for Detroit.
At least Smith's fine will go to a noble cause. The fines go to the Professional Athletes Foundation and the NFL Foundation, per the league.
