Profiling Kenya’s Star Midfielder ahead of AFCON 2027
As we know Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda will be cohosting AFCON for the first time. After the success and controversy of the last edition held in Morocco in 2025, AFCON 2027 is keenly anticipated.
As we look forward to the tournament which will be held in state of the art facilities like Nairobi’s brand new Raila Odinga International Stadium we will be profiling some of the potential stars of the host nations’ teams.
AFCON 2027 will be the first tournament to be hosted by three countries. Games will be played across 10 venues in 7 host cities from 19 June to 17 July 2027. It will see Morocco defend their AFCON 2025 title which was awarded to them controversially after a lengthy appeal and despite Senegal originally winning 1–0 in the final.
Who might be Kenya’s next star man?
Kenya’s next generation has an interesting midfield figure in Timothy Ouma, a 22-year-old who has already played around Europe in his young career. Born in Nairobi, the defensive midfielder has progressed from Nairobi City Stars to IF Elfsborg, Slavia Prague and Lech Poznań before joining Charlton Athletic on loan in August 2026.
Ouma is on loan at Charlton under Nathan Jones and the club have an option to buy him at the end of the season. For a 22 year old he has serious experience having played for his hometown team for 2 years before joining IF Elfsborg in Sweden’s top flight for 3 seasons where he also appeared in 13 Europa League games.
The midfielder joined Slavia Prague in the summer of 2025 but spent the season on loan in Poland with with Lech Poznań where he gained more European competition experience and also won the Estraklasa title.
Ouma played a significant role during that campaign in Poland and his performances clearly caught the eye of the Charlton brass as he gained experience of competing for silverware. He made 34 appearances during the season and helped Lech Poznań retain the championship.
Charlton knew they had signed an international midfielder who had already played regularly at the highest levels in both Sweden and Poland, plus he faced other top European opposition in the Europa League and experienced the demands of being in a title-winning squad.
When Charlton Athletic announced the season long loan deal from Slavia Prague, manager Nathan Jones described Timothy Ouma as an athletic and technical midfielder. Ouma joins his countryman, centre-back Collins Sichenje at Charlton Athletic meaning the adjustment to life in England has been made easier as Sichenje is also a young man at a similar age.
Ouma’s International experience explained
The young midfielder broke into the Kenyan senior mens team at the tender age of 17 years old, making his senior debut against Uganda in November 2021. Since then, he has become a regular member of the squad and looks certain to be one of the top performers heading into the AFCON 2027.
The timing of his move matters because Kenya will want their midfielders playing at the highest level possible before the home tournament and while the Polish League is high quality, playing in the English Championship is certainly a step up.
Playing under Jones means Ouma has a chance of gaining promotion to the Premier League and following in the footsteps of Victor Wanyama who left Celtic, where he was the first Kenyan to score in the UEFA Champions League, to join Premier League side Southampton.
The Saints under Mauricio Pochettino paid what was then a record fee for a Scottish club player of £12.5million before the Argentine coach left to manage Tottenham. It was not long until Victor Wanyama was signed again by former Chelsea, PSG and current USA men’s senior team manager Pochettino and joined him at Spurs. Wanyama enjoyed a solid Premier League career which reached its peak when he played in the 2019 Champions League Final.
Ouma like Wanyama made his full Kenyan senior debut as a teenager the former as a 17 year old while the latter was only 15 years old when he made his debut.
How far can the Charlton midfielder go?
The ceiling is high for Timothy Ouma and given his work ethic and rise through the top divisions around Europe you can easily see him following in Wanyama’s footsteps and making it to the Premier League either with Nathan Jones’ high flying Charlton outfit or being signed by another Premier League club.
The motivation to appear at a home AFCON for Kenya and the fact he is already a title winner in Poland means Ouma is unlikely to be overawed and with 5 years of international football and 12 caps under his belt you can expect the midfielder to be one of the players to watch in 2027.
His work rate and combative defensive skills are what he is known for but Ouma is developing his all around game too. He has become better at distributing the ball and is able to see incisive passes and link his defenders with players in attacking positions while avoiding being reckless or careless with possession. He is comfortable with his ability at the Second tier of the English game and is starting to show what he’s all about. Ouma is improving quickly as he acclimates to the intensity each of the other 23 teams in the Championship operate at.
As we know more and more top professionals are emerging from all over the African continent and Ouma could easily be the next big name to reach the higher echelons of the game. Timothy Ouma is definitely a name to watch and one player who could easily be one of the Kenyan stars of AFCON 2027.
