Arsenal 'make contact' to launch box office raid for £52m striker as Liverpool 'closely…

The latest Premier League transfer news including updates on Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United and more

We’re just five gameweeks into the 2026/27 Premier League season, and it’s already shaping up to be a real classic. Manchester City - plenty more on them later - have marched into pole position atop the table with five wins from five, with Arsenal just three points behind. Elsewhere, Spurs are off to a nightmare start, and currently sit bottom of the table.

With the international break now well underway, it’s been a good opportunity for fans and pundits alike to take stock of how their sides are shaping up and how well they recruited over the summer. An intriguing, stats-based worst team of the season so far emerged containing no fewer than five Aston Villa players, while Everton were among our picks for the worst club summer transfer windows.

Today’s rumours round-up begins at Old Trafford where - in what has previously been a close-guarded secret barely mentioned in the media - Manchester United are, you guessed it, looking for a left-back. Reports in the Spanish printed press, via Sport Witness, say the Red Devils are still highly keen on Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde, after failing to sign him over the summer.

The report describes United’s apparent interest as “firm” and asserts that Barcelona have informed the 22-year-old that he’s their third-choice left-back at present. The player is said to have “refused” to leave the Camp Nou over the summer despite being deemed surplus to requirements, and the January window is predicted to be a pivotal moment in deciding his future.

The 3AM Verdict: Clearly all is not well between Balde and Barcelona. It’s hard to tell whether that’s down to the club, the player, or the manager - it’s probably a combination of all three - but what is clear is that United can’t risk their eagerly awaited new left-back bringing yet more drama to the club. With the player’s contract set to expire in 2028, the Red Devils may well be able to get him for a bargain fee, however.

Liverpool have ‘significant’ interest in Spurs star

Meanwhile, Liverpool are plotting some transfer business of their own, with the club eager to sign a successor to iconic Premier League defender Virgil van Dijk. Caught Offside suggest that the Reds have a “significant” interest in signing his international teammate Micky van de Ven from Tottenham, amid some rival interest from Man United.

It’s noted that while the Dutchman signed a contract extension only a month ago, taking his deal up until 2031, a bid in the region of £80m could be enough to convince the north London club to sell. It’s also stressed that Spurs “remain in control” of the situation for now, but that could change should they fail to improve their fortunes on the field this season.

The 3AM Verdict: Spurs had an excellent summer transfer window, and once their squad properly gels, they should be able to compete with the likes of Man United in the league, if not Liverpool. Another dire season, however, and it would be hard to blame Van de Ven for taking on a new challenge. Despite his injury history, he’d be a top long-term replacement for Van Dijk.

Arsenal ‘make contact’ with Haaland

We’ll round things off with a real humdinger of a story from Football Insider, who claim that Arsenal have made contact with Man City’s Erling Haaland over a potential move. The league leaders are facing an anxious wait after being found guilty of nearly all the 115 charges levelled at them by the Premier League, and speculation continues to mount over their potential punishment.

Should Enzo Maresca’s side be relegated, then their superstars will likely leave en masse. The report says that Arsenal have already put the feelers out to Haaland, along with Real Madrid as both clubs look to seize a huge opportunity. Barcelona are also thought to be in the mix, after sounding out the player over a possible move in the last window.

The 3AM Verdict: Even while Haaland’s been banging the goals in the City, there’s always been a sense that they’re a mere stepping stone to his preferred destination: Real Madrid. Arsenal may well fancy signing the Norwegian goal-machine, but should the worst happen to City, we can’t see him sticking around in the Premier League having already, to quote Jay from the Inbetweeners, “completed it, mate”.
