Injury concern sees Liverpool forward return

**Liverpool’s Alexander Isak has withdrawn from Sweden duty through injury.**

Isak headed into the season’s first extended international break in prolific form after netting four times in seven apparances for Andoni Iraola’s side in all competitions.

That purple patch [earned the forward a nomination for the Premier League’s Player of the Month in September](https://www.clickliverpool.com/sport/liverpool-fc/68413-liverpool-quartet-up-for-latest-premier-league-award/) alongside his Reds teammate Jeremy Jacquet.

He continued the run with his country by scoring the opener in Sweden’s 2-1 win over Romania during their Nations League opener in Stockholm on Friday night.

But Isak is set to return to Merseyside ahead of schedule for assessment on a toe injury sustained in the encounter which Anfield chiefs are describing as ‘minor’.

He told reporters afterwards that it was ‘a real blow’ with Sweden boss Graham Potter previously indicating the British record signing would feature in all four of their games.

If Isak misses Liverpool’s first post-international break outing with Manchester City, Iraola will only have Cody Gakpo and Lewis Koumas as available frontline options.

“Alexander Isak is to return to Liverpool from international duty due to a minor injury,” read a club statement.

“The striker will not be involved in Sweden’s three remaining fixtures in the current international break and will now be assessed by club medical staff at the AXA Training Centre.

“The Reds’ season resumes when Manchester City visit Anfield on Sunday October 11.”
