Jeremie Frimpong has been left out of the Netherlands’ final matchday squad for their upcoming international fixture, providing another frustrating development for the Liverpool defender.
The 25-year-old was initially named among the players selected for the current international break, with Netherlands boss Xavi calling up 24 players for the latest round of fixtures.
However, only 23 players can be included in the final matchday squad, meaning one player had to be omitted from the group submitted to UEFA ahead of Sunday’s game against Serbia.
Frimpong is the player to miss out, with his name absent from the 23-man squad.
The decision comes after the Liverpool defender has seen his opportunities limited at club level in recent weeks.
Andoni Iraola has preferred Ronald Araujo at right-back, leaving Frimpong competing for minutes and struggling to establish himself as the first-choice option.
That lack of regular football has now been compounded by his omission from the Netherlands squad, although Frimpong will still hope to have a role to play during the remainder of the international break.
The Netherlands have further fixtures against Greece and Serbia, giving the Liverpool man opportunities to potentially force his way back into the plans before the international period comes to an end.
Frimpong is also the latest Liverpool player to experience the disappointment of being left out of a final matchday squad.
On Saturday evening, both Rio Ngumoha and Victor Munoz were omitted from their respective squads despite being involved during the international break.
Neither player was ruled out through injury, meaning both were forced to watch on as the World Cup winners secured a 3-2 victory at Wembley.
There has also been concern surrounding another Liverpool player during the international break, with Alexander Isak returning to Merseyside after picking up a minor injury while on Sweden duty.
Isak scored in Sweden’s latest fixture before subsequently being ruled out of their remaining matches, with Liverpool’s medical staff now set to assess the striker at the AXA Training Centre.
With Liverpool’s season set to resume against Manchester City on October 11, the Reds will be hoping Frimpong can return from international duty ready to fight for his place and that Isak’s issue proves to be nothing serious.
