Jarrad Branthwaite got his second cap for England on Saturday night as he came on for the final minutes of the Nations League defeat to Spain – and Everton could do with his involvement with the national team to rise.
Branthwaite is back in the international picture now, with Thomas Tuchel rewarding him with a recall to the squad after a great start to the 2026/27 season with Everton.
Branthwaite has put up some solid numbers so far, and has played a big part in Everton’s keeping five clean sheets in seven games. His partnership with James Tarkowski is also getting better by the week.
For most Everton fans, Branthwaite being in the England squad is extremely deserved, and many believe he is good enough to be the starting centre-back for his country for many years.
He isn’t there yet, but Everton might need him to be soon for one very important reason.
Everton have had plenty of players represent England, but who is the best and why? 👀
Everton need Jarrad Branthwaite to be an England regular to boost chances of lengthy stay
As some fans have seen, there has already been speculation about other clubs liking Branthwaite.
Manchester United remain admirers of the defender, and there is every chance that they will try to test Everton’s resolve in the coming windows.
Branthwaite has never suggested he would be looking to move on from Everton.
But one thing that is bound to work in the club’s favour is if he becomes an established England player.
Right now, he’s not. And there is the notion that him playing for a club that is consistently challenging for trophies and also has more eyes on it would boost his international chances.
If Branthwaite can force his way into that backline and stay there, that will surely give Everton a better chance of keeping hold of him.
Of course there are other factors to consider. At some point, a player of Branthwaite’s quality is bound to start wondering about playing in European competitions.
So the Toffees may need to offer that in order to keep him for many years.
But in an ideal world, Branthwaite will now make his mark with England and oust either Ezri Konsa or Marc Guehi, which will be no easy task. Being left-footed is important, and Thomas Tuchel has spoken highly of him.
Guehi made a big error against Spain and that might open the door for Branthwaite to at least start against the Czech Republic on Tuesday. Then it will be on him to take his chance. No doubt Everton recruitment officials would have everything crossed that he would play well.
