The Los Angeles Rams rolled out three tight ends for their base offense on Sunday. Which came amid Puka Nacua being ruled out at wide receiver amid his hip injury. But tight end Terrance Ferguson needed to step away too against the Denver Broncos.
Ferguson got tangled up with Broncos defender Talanoa Hufanga during a third-and-four sequence. He walked into the locker room under his own power. Ferguson previously scored a touchdown against the New York Giants this past Monday.
But Ferguson wasn't on the field for Tyler Higbee's touchdown to put the Rams ahead 7-0. Quarterback Matthew Stafford found the veteran and captain for the five-yard touchdown.
Stafford completed a combined five passes for 39 yards before the end of the first quarter. Head coach Sean McVay has turned to a tight end heavy offense in recent years. Hence why Ferguson arrived the NFL Draft in 2025 out of the second round. The Oregon star also came to the Rams as their first draft selection of that draft class.
Los Angeles later reeled in Max Klare from the more recent draft class from this past April. Klare also shares a Big Ten connection with Ferguson as a past Ohio State star. But again, McVay turned to more power and heavier TE usage in the last few years after starting out with a three-wide receiver base look in his early years as a head coach.
The Rams took a 7-0 lead on a rainy evening in the Mile High City. This Sunday Night Football showdown pitted the runner-ups of their conferences in 2025 against one another. But Ferguson got ruled questionable with an ankle injury.
