Jurgen Klopp was on the wrong end of a surprise result on Sunday as his Germany team were beaten by Greece in the Nations League.

After drawing with the Netherlands in his first match in charge, Klopp‘s team were expected to bounce back with a win over Greece, but fell to a late loss during a match in which Florian Wirtz failed to deliver once again.

Having come up against Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch last week, Klopp faced another of his former Liverpool players on Sunday, with Kostas Tsimikas playing the full 90 minutes for Greece. And after surprisingly being on the winning side, Tsimikas revealed the details of his reunion with Klopp after the final whistle.

Tsimikas delighted by Klopp reunion

Tsimikas was clearly never one of Klopp’s most important players during their spell together at Liverpool, but he still played a part in the double-winning side of 2021/22 and featured for four years under the German.

Well-known as a joker and a big personality behind closed doors, the Greek Scouser is always good at putting a smile on his teammates’ faces, and as he told Sport24, this extended to Klopp on Sunday, who he managed to make laugh despite a difficult night for his team.

“The most fantastic feeling was seeing him after a long time. I’ve definitely been through a lot with him, there’s a relationship of love and respect between us.” Tsimikas said.

“As I told him, I did what he taught me and I beat him with his own weapons. He was laughing and said ‘congratulations, I’ll see him in a week’. Now we’ll rest because in three days we’re playing another final.”

Germany face Greece again on Sunday, with Klopp hoping to take revenge on his former player. Before then the Germans will face Serbia, who, unfortunately, do not have any current or ex Liverpool players in their ranks. After the disappointment of the past week, maybe that will be a relief to Klopp.
