Liverpool has been given a clear medical verdict on Cody Gakpo's injury, as the Reds face a nervous wait for an update on the star after his early exit during a Netherlands match.

Cody Gakpo will be "lucky" if he avoids a spell on the sidelines, as a medical expert has given an update on the Liverpool star's current situation.

‌

It follows a worrying moment for the forward early on in the Netherlands' clash with Serbia. An awkward tackle saw the 27-year-old land on his ankle, leading him to ask for treatment.

‌

When he realised he couldn't continue, Gakpo was withdrawn, bringing an early end to his night and creating immediate concern over his long-term wellbeing.

Netherlands boss Xavi hoped issue isn't a serious one for the forward, with scans booked for Monday to see the overall extent of the injury he has seemingly suffered.

Especially considering the impressive start to the campaign he has made, there is natural concern about whether Gakpo could miss any upcoming games for the Reds moving forward.

With that in mind, medical expert Physio Scout has discussed the concerns for the forward, who looks set for some time out regardless of the diagnosis of his injury.

The expert said: "Scissor-tackle type mechanism forced Gakpo's ankle into eversion + external rotation. This mechanism raises concern for a syndesmosis/high ankle sprain. Scans will need to rule out any lower-leg fractures."

It's added that a moderate grade ankle issue could result in anywhere from three-to-six-weeks out of action, while a higher grade concern would require surgery, and the possibility of eight-to-ten-weeks out.

On the time out, it's added: "Gakpo will be lucky to escape any lengthy time out with the nature of the tackle. However, scans will be necessary to determine the length of the time out."

It creates a nervous wait for Iraola, who will be hoping for a swift return to action for Gakpo, considering the lack of depth in the squad and the matches that are coming up.

The Reds return to action in just less than two weeks, with a huge test against Manchester City on the horizon that will truly test the team.

Gakpo's involvement could be key, given his start to the season, while injury doubts over Alexander Isak may also cause some concern before the clash at Anfield rolls around.

It remains to be seen what will follow, but Liverpool will be hoping that the rest of the international break can come and go without any more injury drama.
