Johnson offers creative spark as O’Brien helps Ireland to victory

Everton supporters had reasons to be encouraged by Sunday’s Nations League action, with Brennan Johnson showing his creativity for Wales and Jake O’Brien helping the Republic of Ireland keep a clean sheet.

The results were mixed, but there were positives for both Blues to take from their international outings.

Johnson played 83 minutes in Wales’ 2-0 defeat away to Denmark. Despite the scoreline, he created four chances and completed 94 per cent of his passes – encouraging figures from an Everton perspective.

One particularly promising moment saw him drive into the penalty area and pick out Connor Roberts, whose effort was tipped over by Filip Jörgensen.

A Ben Davies own goal and a Gustav Isaksen strike ultimately settled the contest, leaving Wales without a point from their opening two games. Tom King remained on the bench.

O’Brien enjoyed a better result, completing the full match as Ireland beat Israel 3-0 in Debrecen. First-half goals from Troy Parrott, Adam Idah and Jack Moylan put Ireland firmly in control, while the Everton defender recorded nine clearances and seven ball recoveries.

For Blues fans, the hope is that both players can bring those positives back to club football: Johnson’s willingness to create and O’Brien’s contribution to a shutout.

Both countries play again on Thursday, 1 October. Wales host Norway, while Ireland welcome Austria, with both matches kicking off at 7.45pm.
