Chelsea star Cole Palmer has put an end to swirling transfer news about a switch to Manchester United, for now at least. Palmer says his focus stays on his club and his country this season.
Cole Palmer stays committed to Chelsea amid transfer talk
Manchester United have long held an interest in Palmer, even though he came through the ranks at rivals Manchester City. As reported by TEAMtalk, United held talks in January 2026 about signing Palmer for the summer window. United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, was said to be keen on the move at the time. The Blues, though, made clear they had no plans to sell, and wanted at least £150m for their key player. Palmer had also played down talk of a switch away from Stamford Bridge earlier in the year.
Journalist Dean Jones has also given a fresh update on the full story through Flash Score. He wrote that sources close to Palmer say he remains loyal to Chelsea this season. Jones also said Cole Palmer wants to prove himself as a key man for club and country before Euro 2028. That target gives Palmer good reason to avoid the fitness problems that cost him a World Cup place.

Thomas Tuchel sends clear warning to Cole Palmer
England boss Thomas Tuchel picked Palmer for the recent Nations League games, but he pulled out of the squad. Palmer had missed the 2026 World Cup squad due to fitness issues before the tournament. Tuchel said Palmer is playing through pain, and that no player can perform at his best while hurt. Tuchel said bluntly that it was “a missed opportunity” for Palmer, since he “misses too many opportunities” through injury. The England boss added that missing camps limits trust, no matter how talented a player might be. He also made clear that he does not blame Palmer himself for missing the squad.
Palmer has remained a regular starter for Chelsea in the Premier League throughout this term. He has started all five league games so far, showing how much new boss Xabi Alonso rates him in attack. Alonso called Palmer “a special talent” after taking charge of the club in the summer. Palmer often plays a free-floating role behind the striker, and likes to drift wide to link play. This opens space for his wingers to attack the box, and his range of movement makes him hard to mark.
In numbers alone, five starts in five Premier League games say plenty about his standing at Stamford Bridge. Few young attackers in the league carry that level of week-to-week faith from their manager.

What comes next for Palmer and Manchester United
Tuchel also spoke about the wider mood inside his England squad, describing it as positive. He said only players who truly want to be there will get picked going forward. He called it a shared football space built on trust and respect rather than duty. This means Palmer will need steady fitness and clear focus to remain part of Tuchel’s plans.
For now, talk of a Manchester United transfer seems to be on hold, with Palmer settled under boss Xabi Alonso. United face a setback, since Palmer’s loyalty to Chelsea makes a winter move unlikely. That leaves the next transfer window as the real test of whether United will at last make their move.
